11 Best Electric Bikes With Belt Drive in 2023

0
Raleigh Grand Centros E-Bike is one of the best e-bikes with a belt drive

Why would you want a belt-driven e-bike when a chain-driven one is the most common?

A carbon belt offers significantly less maintenance than a standard chain drive while offering the same or better performance. Belt drives are cleaner, don’t require lubrication, and last much longer than chains. So they’re definitely worth considering if you’re in the market for a new electric bike.

The best belt-drive electric bikes for 2023 are:

  1. Ride1Up Roadster v2
  2. KBO Hurricane
  3. Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 IGH
  4. Specialized Turbo Como 4.0 Step-Through
  5. Schindelhauer Heinrich Enviolo
  6. Riese & Muller Supercharger GT Rohloff
  7. Luna Cycle Fat BABE (Bad Ass Belt ebike)
  8. Stromer ST2
  9. TENWAYS CGO600
  10. VanMoof S3
  11. Vvolt Alpha

Ready to find out more about each of these models and which e-bike brand is right for you? I’ve gathered all of the stand-out details as well as some of the disadvantages.

You’re sure to find the best bike equipped with a Gates carbon drive that fits your lifestyle.

1. Ride1Up Roadster v2

The Ride1Up Roadster is by far the least expensive and sleekest of all of the belt drive ebikes. At a price of $1095, this 33 lbs super lightweight model is hard to compare to others. With a fully integrated battery, ultra-quiet motor, and simple design this single-speed is one of the best belt e-bikes for the value.

The Ride1Up Roadster single-speed commuter e-bike

Its powerful Class Three 350W (500W peak) geared hub motor can take you up to 24 mph with pedal assist and a range of up to 30 miles with its 36V 7.0 Ah Samsung battery (35e Cells).

Surprisingly, despite its simplicity, it can still handle a payload capacity of up to 300 lbs. Even though it comes at an affordable price, it boasts a 5-level LCD display and an ergonomic road saddle. Plus, the frame comes in two sizes, fitting riders from 5’8″ up to 6’3″.

The downside is that shorter riders under 5’8″ won’t be able to reach the ground comfortably.

While it may be lightweight and fast, it can actually handle light off-road riding with its mechanical disc brakes and gravel-friendly tires, if you choose the gravel bike option.

Truly the only other electric bike with a Gates carbon drive in this price range is the KBO Hurricane (read about it below to compare further).

2. KBO Hurricane

The KBO Hurricane has made it onto this list because it’s unique in the category of belt-driven electric bikes. The Hurricane is designed to be a “stealth” urban bike. Meaning that it’s made to be as sleek and stealthy as possible, with minimal signs to indicate that it’s electrically powered.

This is achieved by a very simple design, an integrated battery pack, and an integrated rear hub one-speed motor.

And, the Hurricane features no transmission because it’s a single-speed electric bike. However, it does have 3 power modes that determine how much pedal assist the rider is provided with.

This is one of the most well-priced e-bikes made to this high level of quality, as it only costs $1099.

The Hurricane is lightweight, equipped with a 345Wh Panasonic battery pack, and 350W hub motor, and has a range of 45+ miles.

This bicycle may seem very simple, but it’s a very capable electric road bike that is comfortable for almost every rider.

Red Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 IGH with belt drive
Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 IGH with Gates Belt Drive

3. Specialized Turbo Vado 5.0 IGH

Besides rocking a Gates Carbon Belt Drive, the Turbo Vado is unique in that it has advanced pedal technology not found in most other electric bikes.

The Como 5.0 internal geared rear hub motor allows you to predetermine your pedal cadence with its enviolo AUTOMATiQ stepless shifting. And because this system also uses a belt drive instead of a chain drive, you’ll get a smooth ride without messing with a chain or derailleur.

Thus, the Vado continuously adjusts itself to keep you pedaling at your preferred pace.

You’ll also get:

  • A 250W hub motor
  • Hydraulic brakes
  • A suspension seat post
  • DRYTECH Fenders
  • Rear rack with pannier mounts
  • Turbo System Lock
  • And a Garmin Radar available through the display

4. Specialized Turbo Como 4.0 Step-Through

With a 250W motor, hydraulic disc brakes, and three frame sizes to choose from, a relaxed, comfortable ride on the Turbo Como 4.0 is in your future.

The Turbo Como uses the same stepless shifting technology as the Vado, but one feature might make this the perfect e-bike for you. With a step-through frame, you can get on and off easily, whether you need to dismount quickly or simply find it more comfortable to do so.

Plus, it has upright seating that allows riders to be comfortable throughout the ride with less stress on your hands, shoulders, and back.

Another benefit of the Turbo Como is the included Turbo System Lock that disables the motor and activates an alarm when motion is detected.

Other bonuses include:

  • DRYTECH Fenders
  • LED headlight and taillight
  • Rear rack compatible with child seats
  • Capable of pulling a thru-axle trailer

5. Schindelhauer Heinrich Enviolo Electric Bike

The next bike on the list of best electric bikes with belt drive is the Heinrich Enviolo by Schindelhauer.

Schindelhauer is a German e-bike manufacturer that was started by two friends right after leaving university in 2008. This is important to note because their idea was to create electric bicycles with belt drives right from the very start.

This means that all Schindelhauer bikes are designed from the ground up to function perfectly with belt drives, and without having been later adapted as a belt drive e-bike. This results in every component being as optimized as possible.

One of their bikes, The Heinrich Enviolo or the Hannah Enviolo, if you would prefer the e-bike designed for women, is their top-of-the-line model.

It features 8-speed automatic stepless transmission, a powerful Performance Line motor from Bosch, a 500Wh Bosch PowerTube battery, an Enviolo rear hub gear system, and a Bosch Kiox full-color control panel display and control system.

The battery pack is integrated into its frame and is equipped with lights, mudguards, a pannier rack, and a kickstand. Another huge benefit is that this model comes in three different frame sizes to perfectly suit riders of any height.

The belt drives on these e-bikes are the Gates Carbon Drive. The bike’s frame is aluminum to keep the weight as low as possible, and it features hydraulic brakes to ensure maximum safety.

This electric bike is the first on the list, not necessarily because it tops the list in terms of power or performance, but because this is the best all-around e-bike on the market that features a belt drive system.

The Heinrich/Hannah by Schindelhauer is an urban cruiser with a ton of heart and excellent craftsmanship. It’s a well-designed and well-thought-out bike with plenty of features.

There’s only one real disadvantage… this model costs $5015 USD (5195 EURO). Other than the high price, this is the perfect urban e-bike.

Riese & Muller Supercharger with Belt Drive System
Riese & Muller Supercharger GT Rohloff with Belt Drive

6. Riese & Muller Supercharger GT Rohloff

The Supercharger GT Rohloff is described as a heavy-duty electric bike. It’s a rugged bike that is capable of handling almost any situation.

Riese & Muller is another German brand and they produce some of the most versatile electric bikes in the world.

The Supercharger is their flagship model, and it’s so named because of its extra-large battery capacity. It’s actually equipped with dual in-frame 500Wh Bosch battery packs, combining a total of 1000Wh of power and superb battery life! Dual batteries with 1250Wh are also now available!

This is significantly higher than most commercial electric bikes.

Additionally, the Supercharger features a 14-speed internal transmission system by Rohloff with a 1:5.6 gear ratio. This system allows the rider to change gears even while stopped. But it does also require the rider to stop pedaling to change gears, which can take some getting used to.

The stand-out features of this bike are the exceptionally large battery pack that affords it a 100-mile range, top speeds of over 50 miles per hour, heavy-duty tires and wheels, front wheel and seat suspension for extra ride comfort, two luggage racks, and high-end component quality.

However, there are some major drawbacks of the Supercharger… the e-bike’s 65-lb weight and the $9500+ price tag!

Otherwise, this ebike is perfect for all those who enjoy riding tours and long-distance adventures. It’s rugged both in looks and construction, and the all-terrain tires make it far more capable than most other e-bikes.

The Supercharger is equipped with a belt drive that is as tough as its other components.

Luna Cycle Fat BABE E-Bike
Luna Cycle Fat BABE E-Bike

7. Luna Cycle Fat BABE (Bad Ass Belt e-bike)

The Fat BABE by Luna Cycle is the sleekest and most understated fat e-bike on the market. However, the sleek looks and design are not an indication of performance.

This is among the quickest and most powerful fat e-bikes on the market. The Fat BABE is equipped with a Bafang M600 800W motor, a 48V 13.5ah Panasonic GA battery pack, and a 5-way internal Sturmey Archer RSX-RK5 gear hub.

All of these features are internally mounted but fully accessible for repairs and replacements, which means that you can be as rough as you want on the Fat BABE without fearing the difficulty of making repairs.

This electric bike features a Gates Carbon belt drive, which is very simple to maintain. Notorious for their rugged simplicity and effective power transference, these belt drives are more efficient than chain drives and require far less maintenance. Carbon belt drives also last significantly longer than chain drives, which just adds to this fat e-bikes toughness and versatility.

The Fat BABE is equipped with piston hydraulic disc brakes and 4-inch thick fat tires for all-terrain.

The full-spec Fat BABE has a starting cost of $2750 and can be upgraded with a full-color display and quieter drive.

8. Stromer ST2

The ST2 is one of the most well-equipped, modern, and efficient electric bikes on the market. This model is equipped with features that almost no others have and is the ideal choice for those who seek the most technological versatility from their commuter e-bike.

The ST2 is equipped with a low-maintenance and durable Gates carbon belt drive, which sets it apart from other e-bikes in the Stromer range.

It’s unique among the others on this list (and placed at number 4 in the ranking) due to its clever digital connectivity. The Stromer ST2 is equipped with wireless connectivity to the OMNI app, which allows the rider more control of their bike than any other.

The app provides the rider with the ability to make individual adjustments to the motor settings, track mileage and personal performance, and localize the bike via onboard GPS. It even allows the ST2 to be locked and unlocked automatically via Bluetooth.

All of this is done via the riders’ smartphone, and the system is intuitive and simple to use.

Further, the ST2 has a 75 – 110 mile range (depending on the battery life), a rear hub-mounted electric motor that offers pedal assist up to 28mph, and a fully customizable riding position.

One of the major advantages of this Swiss-made bike is that it is fully configurable. You’re able to select the exact features that they require and choose from the list of compatible parts provided by Stromer.

This means that you can customize the range, power, and feature specifications of your own Stromer ST2 before purchasing it. Very few electric bike manufacturers offer this feature, and it’s a major plus for the ST2 overall.

As the lowest-priced ST model begins at around $5700 MSRP, be prepared to make a substantial investment.

Conclusion

As electric bikes become more popular, the features that are available on the market are also increasing quickly.

The use of belt drives, rather than standard chain drives, is a huge part of this advancement in electric bicycle technology.

Belt-driven ebikes are still not as commonplace as many would like, but this is simply because belt-driven bikes are much more expensive than the alternative. For now!

However, if you are seeking one of the best belt-drive electric bikes, the models on this list are the best ones to consider.

Electric Bike Travel Guide: USA E-Bike Adventures

0

E-biking is a fantastic way to see the USA while riding faster and farther than you ever could on a regular bicycle. Whether you want to ride all day in breathtaking National Parks or cruise through iconic American cities, riding e-bikes just makes it fun and easy!

In this electric bike travel guide, you’ll get a complete overview of how to transport your e-bike, where to travel in the USA, and what tools and accessories you need to take with you. Additionally, you’ll find out how to care for and charge your battery while traveling.

For many, including myself, traveling itself has become an active adventure, rather than just a “sit-by-the-pool” vacation. And electric bike vacations and bike tours are proving to be one of the top activities for travelers who want to see the US up close and personal.

How To Transport An E-Bike for Travel

Transporting an e-bike can be a challenge due to its heavy weight and large size. However, there are easy ways to travel with your e-bike in your car, attached to your car, or by plane as long as you have the right accessories.

Since most e-bikes are bulky and weigh anywhere from 38-70 pounds, depending on the battery and motor size and any parts added to the bike, you’ll need to take this into consideration

Continue reading to learn how to effectively transport an electric bike to an e-bike tour or travel destination.

How to Put It In the Car

Foldable E-Bike in Back of Car
Folding RadMini from Rad Power Bikes saves space and fits in the car easily!

Many e-bike models are foldable and portable! By purchasing a folding electric bike, you’ll be able to take it with you camping, to a trail on the beach, or anywhere that you can drive closer to first and be able to pop it right back out of the car.

Pedal-assisted folding bikes can range anywhere from $800-$4,000 USD, although most fall in the $1,500-$2,000 range. These types of bikes work just as well as any electric bike model, but they are more compact and much better for transporting or even storing in a smaller space if you need to!

From first-hand experience, make sure you consider the weight of your bike if you intend to lift it into the car, even if it’s a folding bike. My RadMini electric bike weighs almost 70 lbs. I certainly can’t lift it into the car and most people will need some help.

If you don’t have a foldable bike, there are some other ways to possibly put your bike in a car. You can always try removing the front or back tires, which will definitely allow for more space. If you are able to put your back seats down, placing the bike diagonally will help as well.

Make sure not to place e-bikes upside down as it may damage the handles! And protect the electric motor and other delicate components with a blanket or cushion.

Securing Your Electric Bike in a Truck Bed

Another great way to transport e-bikes is with a pickup truck. Although it sounds easy to throw a bike in the back of a truck, some caution is required. It’s important to strap your bike down in your truck bed to avoid it sliding around or getting damaged from moving too much.

The best way to secure electric bikes in the back of pickup trucks is to use bungee cords or a soft strap. Ratchet straps are actually not as good at securing and may pop off due to the lack of optimal tension.

E-bikes can also be hung over the edge of your truck if you have a tale bike pad to protect the truck. If it’s raining or damp outside, you can cover your electric bike with a blanket or tarp in order to prevent rusting and protect the electric motor and other components from damage.

Travel Racks for E-Bikes

2-Bike Hitch Rack on the back of a hatchback car that fits electric bikes
Saris Door County e-bike hitch rack

In general, e-bikes are more difficult to attach to your vehicle than regular bikes. They will likely need special car bike racks because they are larger, heavier, and have delicate electric parts.

So, it’s important to find racks that have good wheel support and can handle the weight of electric bikes. A pro tip is to remove the battery and store it inside your car before you mount it in order to reduce the weight (and to protect the battery from outside elements)!

How to use a roof hatch with electric bikes

You can attach e-bikes to the roof, also known as a roof hatch. This is one of the more popular and secure ways of transporting traditional bikes. This way can work for electric bikes as well but can be a bit riskier. I’d definitely recommend having one or two others help you lift it and making sure it is strongly strapped down so that it can’t move and scratch or dent the top of your car.

How to use a hitch rack for e-bikes

Hollywood Special Car Bike Rack for Electric Bikes
Hollywood Special Car Bike Rack for Electric Bikes– How they should sit on a rack

The best method for mounting e-bikes is a hitch rack, which is installed on the back of your vehicle. This type of rack is the most secure and easiest option for mounting e-bikes.

However, a hitch rack may be slightly more risky due to the possibility of someone rear-ending your car. And they can be more expensive than traditional bike racks.

Here are some brands and models that are good for mounting electric bikes onto cars. Most of these options can mount 2 bikes:

  • Thule EasyFold- One of the most popular brands
  • Hollywood Racks Sport Rider- They even have a version that fits fat tire electric bikes
  • Saris SuperClamp EX 2-Bike
  • Swagman Escapee
  • Yakima Hitch Bike Rack- Fits 2 Fat Tire electric bikes
  • Hollywood RV Rider- Good for mounting to RV’s or trailer homes

Travel Trailer

A final alternative for transporting electric bikes is to use a 2-inch trailer hitch and attach a small trailer to your car. This will make transporting more than one bike easier and more secure. However, towing a trailer everywhere you go might negate any of the benefits of using this method!

Ship Your Electric Bike

Have you thought about shipping directly to your electric bike vacation or touring destination?

This could be a substantial expense but the convenience could make up for it. If only a portion of your travel involves a bike tour, you probably don’t want to be stuck carting around your e-bikes for the entire trip.

You can actually ship it to a holding location, like FedEx, and pick it up when you’re ready!

Find out everything about shipping e-bikes in this article!

Can You Take an E-Bike on a Plane?

Unfortunately, most airlines do not allow bike batteries to be taken on flights because of the danger of any lithium battery. Batteries are a fire hazard and because lithium is highly flammable. In general, any battery larger than 100Wh is prohibited on a plane.

However, there are ways around this. Electric bikes themselves are allowed, so you can always try shipping your battery separately to your location or renting a new battery once you are there. Or, you can bring smaller batteries that are less than 100WH, but they probably won’t work very well.

It’s still a good idea to call your airline beforehand to double-check any questions you may have about bringing your electric bike, as some may allow batteries up to 160WH or have other suggestions for you.

Where to Travel in the USA With E-Bikes

In general, the USA is a fantastic place to travel with your electric bike. Many cities throughout the US have developed bike paths and bike-friendly roads while there are many public-owned lands and national parks that encourage riding your e-bike.

This is by far the best part of this travel guide… deciding where to go! And what’s great about this is that you can easily discover where to ride your e-bike with Google Maps. Just select your destination or route and use the menu to click on “Bicycling”. You’ll be able to locate bike-friendly paths like in Monterey, CA below in an instant!

This map of Monterey, California shows the amazing “bicycle-friendly” roads and, trails, and dedicated bike lanes in the area.

Are E-Bikes Allowed in US National Parks?

National Parks are probably one of the first places that people think of taking their e-bikes. As of 2019, e-bikes are officially allowed in US National Parks! However, riding them on hiking trails is still prohibited. As long as you’re able to ride them on the main roads, then you can definitely take your bikes to stunning places like Yosemite National Park in California!

Here are some of the best bike-friendly National Parks for riding e-bikes:

All of these parks are not only beautiful and have breathtaking views, but they all have paths and roads that are great for cycling or a bike tour. You can easily ride your bike to explore rather than walking, driving, or taking a bus!

Google Maps will find paths to ride e-bikes in the US National Parks as well. Here’s Grand Teton National Park, WY:

Bike Trails and Roads

E-bikes are allowed on most traditional bike paths and roads in the United States, so it’s not hard to find travel destinations that are perfect for riding.

Just make sure to look up the local laws for riding a specific trail or road in any area as they may differ depending upon your e-bike’s classification and more.

Here are some amazing US cities to ride your e-bike in:

  • San Francisco, CA. This is a great city for commuting and traveling around on a bike. It’s a smaller city with plenty of riding room, and e-biking is easier than driving a car.
  • Portland, Oregon. This is considered to be the best bicycle city in the United States!
  • Austin, Texas. This is a great city for traveling in and considered one of the best cycling cities in America.
  • Tucson, Arizona. Because this is surrounded by desert, there are plenty of open roads to ride on, and has over 700 miles of designated bike paths.
  • San Diego, CA. This is great for biking scenic beach routes and parks.
  • Washington DC. The Capitol of our country and great for traveling around on electric bikes.
  • Missoula, Montana. Montana is a beautiful state with lots of open roads and is also home to the Adventure Cycling Association.
  • Boulder, Colorado. This is near the Rockies and is a stunning place for any bicyclist. Find other great Colorado e-bike trails here!
  • Monterey, California. A beautiful beach town with miles of bike trails right along the ocean (one of the best cities for a bike tour iin my opinion).
  • Eugene, Oregon. A quaint city with paved roads specifically for biking around and plenty of space.

Best States for E-Bike Riding

Although e-biking is legal in all 50 states, some states have stricter rules for riding while some are definitely more “e-bike friendly” in terms of having appropriate space, trails, and scenic routes for riding!

There are three classification systems that a majority of states in the USA follow, all with a maximum motor of 750W:

  • Class One: Allows e-bikes that are pedal-assist only, has no throttle, and a maximum speed of 20mph.
  • Class Two: Allows e-bikes with throttle assist, but still a maximum speed of 20mph.
  • Class Three: Allows e-bikes that are pedal-assist only, has no throttle, but allows a maximum speed of 28mph.

The states that follow the same general rules and stick within these classification systems include:

Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Traveling to California? Check this out:

While these next states don’t follow this three-tiered classification system, they do have specific rules for electric bikes that you should look up before traveling and riding here:

Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Vermont.

The remaining 10 states have unclear e-bike laws and it is important to research your state specifically to see what their laws are. These include:

Alabama, Alaska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.

Each state may also have different age limits for riding e-bikes or helmet requirements, so be sure to look up whatever state you live in just to double-check the laws.

Electric Bike Travel Accessories

There are several accessories you’ll need when traveling with your electric bike. In addition to a battery and charger, you’ll need a specialized bike tool kit, tire repair kit, and cargo storage as well other optional items like a bicycle travel case or folding pedals.

Do I Need a Travel Case for My Electric Bike?

Other than the battery, this could be the most expensive item you’ll need to take your e-bike traveling with you. At an average price of $500 or more, you’ll be spending a lot to protect your also expensive bike.

The question is, do you need a rolling cover for airplane transport or a hard-sided case to put on the top or back of your car? Or maybe both? If you’ll be traveling where it’s rainy, snowy, or windy, you’ll want to make sure your bike is protected. Thus, just attaching them to the back of your car is not a good option.

Thule has several options to fit your needs.

Do I Need an Extra Charger?

Let’s face it… you have to take your battery with you wherever you go. You’ll need a lot of battery power for a full day or overnight bike tour. But you do have a couple of options:

  1. Get a lighter-than-typical battery that still works with your e-bike model. Bosch has a smaller and lighter charger that works well for travelers. It’s only 160mm long and 75mm wide as compared to a standard charger which is likely 190mm long and 86mm wide. Further, the Bosch charger only weighs 60 grams as compared to an 800-gram regular charger.

When shopping for a charger, whether it’s a second travel charger being purchased or you’re getting one for regular use, you’ll want to consider the charging time. Bosch’s smaller battery can take up to twice as long to charge, which could be a problem if you’re making a quick stop while traveling to charge it.
  2. Frankly, it might just be more efficient to just take your own regular battery along during your travels. You could even buy a second one just for this purpose. Of course, at an average cost of $500, that’s a pretty expensive way to go!

Get a Bicycle Tool Kit

Although this can be a little bulky, a tool kit made just for bikes is a necessity. A bike tool kit will have several items to fix specific parts on your bike that a regular tool kit won’t have. This includes a pedal wrench and various other wrenches and allen keys that’ll fit your bike’s nuts and bolts.

Take a look at these 25 useful accessories for your e-bike!

Get a Tire Inflator and Repair Patch Kit

This is not optional! Hopefully, you already carry these with you wherever you ride. However, taking care of your tires becomes even more important when on the road or far from home. Keeping your tires inflated properly will provide a more efficient ride and protect your tires.

And if you end up with a flat tire and can’t find a local hardware or bike store with a tire repair kit, you could be in a world of trouble. Pushing your heavy e-bike 20 or 30 miles is not going to be fun!

Consider getting your tools and tire repair in one kit like this one on Amazon for about $30:

Get all of these tools and tire inflator in one kit from XCH Robots

What About Folding or Removable Pedals?

If you’re traveling by car or in an RV, folding pedals could really come in handy. Being able to fold up or remove one or both of your bike pedals can help your bike fit better on a bike carrier or in your RV (one less thing to trip over).

Plus, it’ll be harder for a thief to ride off with your bike!

Cargo Bag with Food and Personal Items

If you’re traveling where you’ll be riding trails and roads in the backcountry, you’re going to need to carry more gear than usual. The best way to go about packing your cargo bag is to always assume that you could get stuck somewhere unexpected.

Here’s what you should have in your bag:

  • Additional layers of clothing
  • Small tire tube repair kit
  • meals or snacks
  • sunscreen
  • medications
  • keys to e-bikes and hotel or lodgings
  • extra water

Bike Locks for Security

Chain Lock example for an e-bike
Hiplock chain bike lock

Even if you already have a bike lock that you use, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your security needs for traveling. Your e-bike will be at a higher risk of getting stolen because there will be many additional opportunities for thieves… at the campground, while you’re sightseeing, when you stop to use the restroom, etc. So, make sure you have the very best lock (you might consider using two or more at a time).

You’ll want to secure your e-bike to your car or RV and also be able to lock it up during your ride. A high-security U-Lock or a heavy-weight chain lock is a good bet due to its incredibly strong steel. The downside to both, however, is that they’re pretty heavy (3-4 lbs) and will add 3-4 lbs of weight onto your bike, which is already heavy due to the electric components.

Although a little heavier than the u-lock, a chain lock is far more flexible, making it easier to lock up your e-bike just about anywhere.

Battery Charging on the Road

Always plan ahead for keeping your battery charged while riding long distances (if camping or traveling, you may be able to charge using a generator). (if camping or traveling, you may be able to charge using a generator).

You’ll be able to charge your e-bike and protect your battery by doing a little research before you set off. Find out where the charging powerpoints are and what amenities are located on your riding path. Then check the local weather for rain, snow, and wind.

Where can I charge my e-bike?

As long as you remember to bring your battery with you, you’ll be able to charge it, even in places you wouldn’t have thought of.

Of course, you’ll always want to recharge your battery when you’re done riding at night and back where you’re staying. But you’ll also find powerpoints at coffee shops, airports and train stations, and gas stations. And, if you ask nicely, you might be allowed to charge it in a business office, church, or other retail location.

If you’re camping, plan ahead! It’s best to stay at a camp spot that has power outlets… because some don’t!

Learn all of the important battery charging tips here.

How to protect your battery from the elements

Just as you’d protect your battery at home, you’ll need to take care of it while traveling. Doing so may be even more challenging on the road due to temperature and humidity changes in your car and while riding.

Still, you should do everything you can to keep your battery well above freezing temperatures and preferably above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The ideal temperature is always between 32-68 degrees, no matter where you’re traveling. If you’re riding in a humid location, make sure to take your battery into your air-conditioned hotel or condo as soon as possible.

A good rule is to just not leave your battery outside or in the car without you… remove it and bring it with you. If the temperature and moisture in the air are comfortable where you are, then your battery will be in good shape.

Should You Bring an Extra Battery?

Ideally, having an extra battery while you’re traveling is a great idea. You won’t have to worry about not finding a charging station when you need it or accidentally forgetting to charge it. And if you’re a semi-professional rider, you might use both batteries on one ride!

But you will have to pay for two batteries and carry the extra bulk and weight of two batteries. So you’ll have to decide whether it’s worth it. I’d say that it’s definitely worth it if you’ll be riding daily and if riding your e-bike is the focus of your trip.

E-Bike Touring in the USA

If you’ve never traveled with your e-bike before, it’s probably a good idea to get some experience doing so before deciding to ride longer than a few hours. An overnight electric bike tour is generally for more experienced riders who want to see vast amounts of the USA on their e-bike.

Generally, bike touring is when you ride all day and spend at least one night somewhere. Many riders will tour for days or weeks on end. Food and supplies can be carried on your e-bike or in a car that meets up with you in various places to offer you food, respite, and overnight gear.

Riding an electric bike is an exceptionally wonderful way to begin touring. First, electric bikes really level out the fitness abilities of each rider so that it’s easier to keep up with one another. One person can ride hard and fast but their traveling companion can easily catch up. if they fall behind.

And if you’re concerned that it might be too hard, you know your electric bike will do the job for you.

That being said, your main concern will need to be about the battery. If you expect to use motor power to ride for a long day or to keep up with others, you’ll need to have a good, strong battery. You should also plan ahead to find charging spots on the road so that you won’t get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

When touring with an electric bike in the United States, it’s a very good idea to have a second, fully-charged battery, especially due to the vast areas of open land, deserts, and mountains. Additionally, take into consideration all of the travel accessories mentioned previously… because you’re going to need them!

And if you’d like to read about touring on an electric bike from a guy who claims that “bike touring is the love of my life”, then feel free to check out his article in Cycling West here.

Renting E-Bikes

Don’t want to lug your ebike around the United States? Many bike shops rent electric bikes as an option for a slightly increased charge over a normal bike. And you can still follow this e-bike travel guide whether you own or rent a bike.

On average, you can rent an electric bike in the USA for $20 per hour or $75 per day, depending upon whether you are in a popular destination or a large city. Professional bike tour companies will also rent you an e-bike along with a self-guided or group tour.

Read this article on everything you need to know about renting an electric bike!

Electric Bike Day Rentals

In California, a popular place for riding because of the nice weather, rental shops charge around $20-$25 per hour to rent a bike, while the full day can be around $75-$80. And you’ll probably be given the option to add on equipment such as an extra battery or hitch rack for your car for $5-$10 each per day.

Some major cities have electric bikes available on the street. These are connected to an app and can be hopped onto anywhere you can find one. Usually for these, you pay a certain amount of money per minute you use the bike, but it is perfect if you need to get somewhere quickly. It’s also a great way to try out an electric bike for the first time!

Every county and state is different, so it’s a good idea to look up bike rentals near you. If you‘re going to a popular tourist area, you’re likely to find some quality electric bike rental shops that will show you everything you need to know to ride.

E-Bike Tour: Self-Guided or Group

Along with a traditional bike tour, many places now offer an electric bike tour! You can choose a self-guided one or a group one, however, in most cases, the group tours will cost a bit more. Prices may range from $700 for self-guided to $1,500 for a group bike tour and more, depending on the location and length of the tour.

Some bike tour options are now even labeled as Electric Bike Vacations!

Just look up electric bike tours near you or your vacation destination and see what they have to offer.

Summary

I hope you’ve enjoyed this electric bike travel guide and are excited to ride throughout the US. There are many adventures awaiting you and e-biking is a great way to find them. With endless big cities, stunning countryside, and unbelievable National Parks, you’re sure to become an experienced e-bike traveler in no time.

12 Best Places to Ride Electric Bikes in the USA (Paved Trails)

Best Places to Ride Electric Bikes in the USA Paved Trails

Here’s the #1 thing I love about electric bikes… you can ride just about any hill, paved path, road, or bike trail because you have the power of the motor behind you! And long-distance riding is certainly easier.

Yet, you might still prefer to stay on paved trails, even as an e-bike rider.  Not only do asphalt and concrete bike trails give you a smooth ride, but they also allow you to see more and adventure further. However, finding the best paved roads for e-bike riding is time-consuming and requires digging through article after article.

So, to make it easy, I’ve compiled a list of the best places to ride electric bikes in the USA… and they’re all paved trails!

First, I’ve put together a table of the best paved bike trails in the U.S., listing their location, name, distance one-way, weather, amenities along the route, and what makes each one special for a long ride on your e-bike.

Then, keep reading to learn other important information about each e-bike trail, including where to find the trailhead for each one.

1. Shining Sea Bikeway (Massachusetts)

This amazing rail-trail bike path is perfect for starting to explore riding your electric bike long distances. But it’s also totally worth it for any e-bike rider.

Shining Sea Bikeway
Shining Sea Bikeway

You’ll ride wooded areas, through a saltwater marsh, past beautiful rivers, and get a scenic view on the section of Cape Cod seaside. If starting in Falmouth, you’ll end your ride overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with the opportunity to take a swim or relax on the beach.

I’ve listed this as one of the best places to ride electric bikes in the USA because it was named after the “America the Beautiful” song lyrics…. And because it includes some of the most diverse terrains you’ll see on a 10-mile bike ride.

Paved Trailhead

Start at the Falmouth Depot Road trailhead near Pine Street for the easiest parking (and to enjoy the best scenic reward once you reach your destination). The Woods Hole trailhead can be quite congested.

2. Provo River Parkway (Utah)

“Parkway” is a perfect name for this bike trail, as it winds from Utah State Park to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. Plus, there are a few other parks along the way!

With a gradual incline, this multi-use trail is mostly flat with just a few steep uphill climbs. So even the lowest wattage e-bike can manage this, although going up the hills may be slower than you’d like. Although you’ll find walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts on the path, it’s plenty wide for all at 8-10 feet throughout.

With water, restrooms, and picnic areas along the way, you’ll be well taken care of. And the main feature of your e-bike ride will be a stunning view of Bridal Veil Falls at the northern end!

There are a couple of places where you’ll need to cross a street or ride through a narrow underpass.

Plus, this 15-mile path connects to 100+ miles of other paved trails, so you can ride your electric bike as far as you’d like. Just keep an eye on your battery charge (and know its range in the first place) so you don’t get stuck in the middle of a long trail without assistance).

Bike Trailhead

Start at Utah Lake State Park or Vivian Park at the Northern end.

3. Trail of the Coeur d’Alene (Idaho)

With 73 miles of paved trail through spectacular mountains and valleys, this is one worth spending a few days traveling over.

Bike Trail of the Coeur d’Alene
Bike Trail of the Coeur d’Alene

With lots of places to stop and visit, you’ll get the most out of this adventure by spending a few days in the area and tackling a portion of the bike trail each day! If you do, this will truly be one of the best paved bike trails in the U.S. when it comes to lots to see and do!

If you’re traveling during the warm season, you can stop for a cool dip in the lake at Heyburn State Park.

And any time of the year, keep a lookout for lots of wildlife, including beavers, moose, and perhaps a black bear family. In the historical town of Wallace, you’ll find great food and entertaining attractions.

One more cool fact… this trail is connected to over 3,700 miles of developing rail trail called the Great American Rail Trail!

Bike Trailhead

There are many small towns in which you can park and access the trail. Consider starting your e-bike ride in Harrison and continuing on to the end of the route in Plummer (this is a scenic 30-mile round trip ride around and across Lake Coeur d’Alene).

4. Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail (California)

Another one of the best places to ride your e-bike is in one of my favorite California cities, Monterey. This 18-mile trail down the coast is easy on an electric bike, even if you ride both ways.

Monterey Bay Coastal Trail Bike Path
Monterey Bay Coastal Trail

You’ll wind along the Pacific Coast on a protected paved rail-trail path with amazing views of the ocean, boats, sea lions, and maybe even otters. And there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take pictures.

You can even stop for lunch and shopping in Cannery Row or Fisherman’s Wharf, or take a tour of the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Just be sure to securely lock up your e-bikes if you leave them unattended!

Bike Trailhead

You can start inland at Castroville or on the south coastal end in Pacific Grove. The rail begins here near Ocean View Boulevard and Jewell Ave. You can probably find street parking with some patience or park in the paid lot.

5. Rincon Bike Trail (California)

Although you’ll find information stating that this is only a 3.6-mile ride, you can actually ride almost 20 miles one way if you ride from Ventura into the town of Carpinteria!

Man standing next to e-bike near the ocean
My husband ad I rode 40 miles from Ventura to Carpenteria and back. What an adventure (that ended with a flat tire 1/2 mile form the end)!

Most of the ride is protected but, if you want to go the full distance, then you’ll have to ride a short jaunt on the 101 freeway (½ mile maybe) and on some side roads with car traffic.

However, with a little caution on these parts, it can make for an awesome full day’s ride. Stop in Carpinteria for lunch on the beach before riding back to Ventura (my husband and I grabbed some tacos and ate them on the beach) or enjoy the beach and boardwalk on the Ventura end.

It can be quite windy, so dress accordingly. But the good news is that the wind won’t keep you from riding the full distance on your pedal-assist electric bike!

Bike Trailhead

Start riding in Ventura (there’s a bike path parking lot off E. Main St.) and head North or begin your e-bike ride at Carpinteria State Beach. Alternatively, if you want to avoid getting on the 101 FWY, start in Ventura and turn around at Rincon point.

Take a look at the very best places to ride your e-bike in California!

6. River Mountains Loop Trail (Nevada)

This is a wonderful 35-mile loop trail that’s paved and approximately 12 feet wide. From this bike trail, you’ll get a full view of the River Mountains as you ride around them and might even spot Bighorn Sheep (one of the largest populations lives here).

River Mountains Loop Bike Trail
River Mountains Loop Bike Trail

You’ll also connect to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Hoover Dam, which is an amazing must-see! There are also several connecting trails to check out, as long as your ebike’s battery charge can go the distance.

Even though you’re in the desert area, you’ll be riding uphill and downhill and may find some areas of gravel even though the path is paved (or if you choose to continue onto another trail).

Bike Trailhead

There are many places to start your ride on this loop. If you’d like to start with a big climb (so you won’t have to do it later when you’re tired), park at the Lake Mead Visitor Center and ride clockwise.

7. North Pathway (Wyoming)

You and your e-bike won’t want to miss out on this amazing paved path. As it parallels HWY 89 and Teton Park Road, it’s a stunning way to see the Grand Teton Mountains, and numerous wildlife, and even stop for a little fishing at Flat Creek.

Google maps of the bike trails and bike-friendly roads in Grand Teton National Park, WY
North Pathway Bike Trail Grand Teton

Halfway through this completely doable 20 miles (it’s easy on an e-bike at least), you’ll find the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center is a nice respite. Then, once you get to the northern end of the bike trail, you’ll get to the Jenny Lake Visitor Center where you can even connect to the Jenny Lake bike path to ride along the eastern shoreline of the lake.

But the trails still continue… the Jackson Hole Community pathway adds another 27 miles of paved road all the way to Teton Village.

Bike Trailhead

Start at any of the three Visitors Centers, where each provides parking, drinking water, and restrooms. Starting on the southern end is Jackson Hole, then Craig Thomas, and then Jenny Lake Visitor Centers (Grand Teton National Park), respectively.

8. Shark Valley Trail (Florida)

Here’s one trail you might not have heard much about. Located in the Everglades National Park, you can ride your electric bike (as long it’s 750 watts or under) on Shark Valley Tram road around an easy 15-mile loop of wetlands.

Although you won’t have to worry about your safety riding in traffic, you will have the occasional park tram pass you on this fully paved trail. But don’t be deceived by this nice little road. Watch out for alligators and other wildlife on the roads! Good thing the speed limit is 15 mph (yes, even on your e-bike).

Halfway through your ride, you can stop at the Shark Valley Observation Tower and look over the park for miles.

You can start your ride right behind the Visitors Center (and even rent a regular bicycle if you’d rather not bring your electric bike).

Paved Trailhead

You can enter the park in your car or park outside it on the Tamiami Trail and ride in. There will be a fee for each bicycle (around $15 each).

9. Chief Ladiga Trail (Alabama)

Ready to bike to the Alabama/Georgia State Line? This 33-mile path should be no problem on your electric bike!

Chief Ladiga Bike Trail
Chief Ladiga Bike Trail

In fact, the trail is a smooth, flat ride through the countryside and small towns, all the way to Georgia where you can pick up the Silver Comet Trail for another 62 miles (okay, you might need to recharge your e-bike battery overnight before continuing).

This bike path is unique in that it passes through wetlands, open fields, and forests. There’s even a stretch of the trail in which you’re likely to see wildlife such as deer and foxes. Further, there are quiet towns to stop in as well as Jacksonville State University.

Bike Trailhead

10. Paul Bunyan State Trail (Minnesota)

This insanely long paved bike road (119 miles!) is one of the longest rail-trail, multi-use paved bike paths in the USA.

Paul Bunyan State Bike Trail
Paul Bunyan State Bike Trail

Naturally, you don’t have to ride its entire length, but you may just want to take a few days on your e-bike to work your way along this inactive 1893 railroad. Since there are towns to stop in for the night every 10 miles or so, this isn’t as hard as it sounds (just make sure you have the electric bike travel accessories you need, especially if you’re camping).

Besides being no big thing riding an electric bike a long distance, it’ll be worth encountering over 30 lakes, rivers, and streams along the way. And wildlife? Yes, absolutely!

Bike Path Trailhead

Start at either Crow Wing State Park or Lake Bemidji State Park on the northern end.

11. Banks-Vernonia State Trail (Oregon)

This paved rail trail is one of the best trails for families and boasts stunning views over 13 bridges and two huge railroad trestles. It’s one of the best places to ride your electric bike in the USA in the summer! With beautiful weather along for the ride, you’ll get a view of the coast as well as forests, rivers, and creeks.

Banks-Vernonia Bike Trail
Banks-Vernonia Paved Bike Trail

The path is typically 8 feet wide which runs alongside a horse path, and is generally only a slight incline. However, there is an area of switchbacks that go up 700 feet… but the path is still plenty wide.

Make use of picnic areas and interpretive trails, as well as L.L. Stub Stewart State Park and Campground. Then enjoy the shops, town museum, and art galleries of Vernonia before heading back over 22 miles to the beginning of the trail in the city of Banks.

Trailhead

The city of Banks trailhead has the easiest parking, as well as water and restrooms. It’ll also provide for the longest ride. You’ll find the beginning of the route at NW Banks Road and NW Sellers Road.

12. Great American Rail-Trail (13 States)

I just couldn’t get away without mentioning this! The Great American Rail Trail is a multi-use bike path being developed all the way across the northern part of the USA, from the state of Washington to Washington, DC.

These paved trails have been built for over 30 years and are perfect for riding electric bicycles, even if you’re a beginner. Not only are they meant for bike riding, but with an e-bike, you’ll have no problem seeing any part of this trail system as you wish.

But you can’t yet just ride the full 3700+ miles without connecting to other roads and trails. Instead, it’s best to find a portion of the trail that you’d love to ride your e-bike on and drive to each trailhead.

However, the most fully developed bike paths(over 200 miles) are in Washington DC and Maryland and start at the U.S. Capitol.

Paved Bike Trailheads

You’ll have to do a bit of searching to decide where in the northern U.S you’ll travel in order to connect to a Great American Rail Trail. But, if you’re up for a lot of e-bike riding, I’d suggest starting at the United States Capitol and riding west!

Conclusion

Generally speaking, as an e-bike rider, you can ride on almost any public land in different states with the help of your bike’s electric motor.

But, if you’d prefer to ride on paved bike trails, then the list and details above will help you decide which trail you want to ride on first! And although most electric bikes are allowed on these paths, you should check individual U.S. state laws before riding (especially if you have a Class 3 e-bike).

Frankly, the best trails for electric bikes are those that are paved. Riding on them will offer amazing views of so many places, landscapes, and small towns that you’d never see otherwise, even though you might’ve lived in the U.S. your whole life.

KBO Breeze Electric Bike Review (Pros and Cons)

0

If you’re looking for a commuter electric bike or fun recreational riding, the affordable KBO Breeze electric bike is worth considering.

In this KBO bike review, you’ll discover the pros and cons of the Breeze e-bike and what you need to know to decide if this is the best electric bike for you.

Check out its performance and notes from my testing and review.

Pros of the KBO Breeze

  • The KBO Breeze has up to a 55-mile range that allows most commuters and recreational riders to get from point A to point B and back again, without having to recharge!

After riding about 25 miles, I lost only about 1 ½ battery bars on the display. But, keep in mind that I rode these miles primarily on levels 1 and 2, using minimal throttle except during testing.

  • And even with a larger battery capacity, it only takes 5 hours to fully charge. This allows for a pretty quick turnaround time.
  • Another pro of the KBO Breeze is its integrated LED headlight AND rear brake light. As an electric bike commuter, you don’t ever want to be caught in the dark!
  • Then KBO added full metal fenders and a rear rack. These, combined with the integrated lights and larger battery, give you everything you need for your daily ride.
  • And, as a bonus to an ebike in this price range, the KBO Breeze is pretty comfortable. You’ll enjoy the ergonomic handlebar grips and sit upright on an adjustable saddle built to reduce bumpy riding.
  • Plus, the Step-Thru Breeze is easy to get on and off without swinging your leg up and over. And any cargo you carry won’t get in your way.
  • The Breeze also has a sizeable payload capacity of 300 lbs, a twist throttle that went well over 20 mph during testing, a front suspension fork, an easy-to-read backlit LCD display, and some free accessories.
  • And, finally, in my opinion, it’s a beautiful ebike! The white step-thru looks really sleek but the energetic bright orange is a lot of fun as an option.

The Breeze has everything you need in a commuter electric bike!

Cons of the KBO Breeze

  • At 62 lbs, it still weighs a little more than you might like for a commuter electric bike. It won’t be super easy to carry upstairs or hang for storage.
  • And, since it doesn’t fold, taking it on a train or bus won’t happen easily.
  • Another possible disadvantage to the Breeze e-bike? Unfortunately, when it comes to the step-through model, you may not be able to ride comfortably if you’re much shorter than 5 feet 2 inches or taller than 6 feet 3 inches. However, the KBO Breeze step-over model will accommodate slightly taller riders.

At around 5’1″ tall, I can just fit comfortably on the Breeze. However, your comfort has a lot to do with how long your arms and legs are, as well as other factors (make sure to see measurement info below).

KBO Breeze Review: Overview

For a commuter electric bike under $1500, most of what you get with this ebike can be expected.

For instance, the KBO Breeze has a sustained motor of 500 Watts with a peak of 750 Watts. You’ll get moving plenty fast and ride a steep hill easily, as I did.

Additionally, there are 5 pedal assist levels, 7-speed gears, tall 2.4-inch wide puncture-resistant tires, and mechanical disc brakes.

But here’s where I see that KBO went beyond the standard:

The removable, integrated, 16 Amp hour battery. With it, you can ride 10-15 miles further than many ebikes at similar prices and quality. Frankly, this can make a huge difference in the value of a commuter ebike.

Please note: KBO provided the Breeze electric bike for independent review and testing. They don’t tell me what to say or do. Instead, my opinions and comments are based solely on my evaluation, test rides, and experience.

First Test Ride & First Impressions

My first ride on the KBO Breeze was well, literally, a breeze! As you can see above in the pros and cons section, there are only a few potential cons. I took off fast, changed gears, increased pedal assist, throttled, and braked easily.

Plus, I noticed how fast the 27.5″ tall tires took me as compared to smaller 20″ or 26″ tires.

The only slight technical difficulty was that the front fender rubbed against the tire a bit. I adjusted it easily (this may have been my error during installation).

Motor

As commuter e-bikes go, I found the KBO Breeze to take off plenty fast. Although it has a 500W sustained brushless hub motor, it peaks at 750 watts, giving a healthy speed increase when needed.

KBO Breeze Rear Hub Motor

Battery & Range

As I’ve already mentioned, finding a similarly priced, quality electric bike that gives you up to 55 miles may be hard. The battery range and overall battery life are above average for a single-battery commuter e-bike.

Plus, even though it has good size battery, it only takes around 5 hours to fully charge.

KBO_Breeze_Large_battery
The KBO Breeze has a longer than typical range thanks to its large integrated battery.

Pedal Assist and Throttle

With five pedal assist levels and a throttle that takes you just over the maximum 20mph speed, there is nothing to complain about here. I felt particularly confident about getting up the steep hills in my area. The KBO Breeze is a bike that doesn’t sweat!

KBO Breeze Review: Wrap-Up

Should you buy the KBO BREEZE?

The KBO Breeze might be the best electric bike for you if ride daily to work or school, take long recreational rides, or need to carry cargo. It’s also a great ebike if you intend to ride at night, thanks to the backlit display and integrated lights.

I might also point out that KBO eBikes have a 2-year warranty and financing available. Plus, it was easy to assemble with the cool multitool that comes with the Breeze electric bike.

However, it is not the best ebike for you if you need to carry it up a flight of stairs or on a bus or train during your commute.

I hope you enjoyed the KBO Breeze Electric Bike Review!

Haoqi Electric Fat Bike Review: Overview

Listed at a retail value under $2000, the Haoqi Eagle e-bike is a powerful, long-range fat tire electric bike that rides well on pavement, dirt, and gravel. As of this review, you can purchase the Haoqi Eagle Step-Over or Step-Thru electric bicycle for a discount off the regular price!

Plus, you might also get some cool, free accessories with your purchase. I was given a bike with full fenders and a rear rack, but currently, they’re also offering a free trapper hat and cycling gloves.

Both the step-over and step-through versions of this long-range electric bike come with similar features. The primary difference with the step-thru frame is that you don’t have to swing your leg over the top tube or bulky rear cargo to get on or off.

Overall, you’re getting a powerful 48 Volt 750 Watt fat tire electric bike with a longer than typical range (up to 75 miles).

Test Rides & First Impressions

I first had the opportunity to ride the Haoqi Eagle e-bike at night, just after assembly. So, I was immediately surprised at the bright headlight! In fact, in a matter of perhaps three minutes, I had two cars pause to turn as I approached from quite a distance away. It was definitely nice to be visible in the dark!

Additionally, three other experienced e-biking friends enjoyed taking it for a spin. We were all immediately excited at the power and speed and there was a lot of high-pitched laughing going on!

One of the other first things I noticed during e-bike testing is how stable the Haoqi Eagle feels. The 4.0″ fat tires do an excellent job of balancing and giving a sense of security on loose ground. Honestly, I was initially a little worried about riding such a heavy electric bike, especially since I’m a small rider. So I was surprised that I felt quite comfortable riding it (more on comfort later on).

Motor

The rear hub drive 48V 750W motor is plenty powerful and fast. The Eagle ebike takes off quickly and the motor is relatively quiet.

Battery & Range

Man holding large electric bike battery.
The Haoqi Eagle has a rather large battery. This is why it has a longer than typical range!

Thankfully, the Eagle’s high-capacity, long-range 48V 20Ah battery can take you on a longer than typical ride. You should be able to get a 40-70 mile range on one charge. I easily rode 20 miles on levels 1 and 2 without noticing a battery charge drop. However, as soon as I used the throttle (which I tested to its max capacity), the display showed a drop of around 15-20%.

Naturally, how many miles you’ll get on a single charge depends on several factors.

Yes, the battery needs about 6-9 hours to fully charge from 0%. However, I think that most riders who want to ride long distances will appreciate the range. And those who take short rides will be able to take several short rides before needing to charge again.

Pedal Assist

The 12-magnet intelligent pedal assist is standard and works as it should. On flat ground, I felt a speed increase at each level. And, increasing the assistance as I climbed a steep hill kept me at a consistent pace.

Throttle

Haoqi Eagle Throttle and Gears
Haoqi Eagle Throttle and Gears

The Eagle comes with a standard half-twist throttle that works in an interesting way. It’s definitely powerful enough to get up to 20mph fast, but you need to be on pedal assist level 5. Here’s what the throttle speed burst looks like at each level on a slight incline:

  • 8-9 mph on PAS Level 1
  • 11mph on PAS Level 2
  • 15mph on PAS Level 3
  • 17mph on PAS Level 4
  • 20mph on PAS Level 5

I suppose this could be considered a good design. If you’re riding on level 1, then it’s likely you don’t want or need to take off super fast. Taking off more slowly is consistent with your general speed and is probably safer.

So, just keep in mind that you won’t be able to throttle fast unless you first dial up your pedal assistance.

Consider your overall battery life before using the throttle too often.

The Haoqi website reports the payload capacity for the Eagle electric bike to be between 350 lbs and 380 lbs. In the chart above, I listed 380 lbs as the maximum weight limit. This includes whatever gear you put on your rear rack.

For safety purposes, I believe it’s always wise to fall a little under the maximum capacity.

Comfort

Woman sitting on the Haoqi ebike
The Haoqi Eagle was comfortable for a small person like me!

Overall, the Haoqi Eagle electric bike is comfortable and easy to ride. This is especially notable for small riders like me. After all, it’s a big, heavy ebike and every rider should feel good about handling it.

When it comes to comfort, the Eagle offers what is expected for an electric bike of this price.

  • Bike Saddle: The seat is slightly larger and more comfortable than the standard e-bike seat. I found it to be just fine on a 12-mile ride. But since this is a personal thing, it’s easy to add a seat cover or a new seat if you need more padding.
  • Handlebar Grips: They’re not ergonomic but rather fully round. They’re not the most comfortable grips ever, but I doubt I’d even consider them if I wasn’t writing an electric bike review. That being said, I’m able to get a good grip and my hands didn’t slip when going over rough terrain.
  • Suspension: The front suspension knocked out a lot of jarring over bumpy terrain and provided a comfortable ride.

Safety

The Haoqi Eagle provides basic safety features:

  • High Lumen Headlight: This is the safety feature that stands out. The headlight is powerful and very noticeable to others (cars stopped for me from a good distance away).
  • Battery Operated Rear Light: This is not integrated into the electrical system and requires a battery.
  • Bike Bell: I can’t say much about this bell other than it’s pretty cheap. I used it once and felt it break under my small thumb. You’re better off getting an inexpensive higher-quality bell like this one on Amazon.

What Other Eagle E-Bike Owners Are Saying

There aren’t a lot of reviews on this newer electric bike model yet. However, the Haoqi Leopard electric bike, which the Eagle was upgraded from, has many customer reviews, most of them 5-star. But, here’s the feedback so far on the Haoqi Eagle ebike, long-range, which also has 5 stars.

Unboxing and Assembling the Haoqi Eagle: Time and Instructions

Hoaqi Eagle ebike inside box
The Haoqi Eagle comes in a big box!

Unboxing this Haoqi electric bike was straightforward. Because it is a pretty heavy bike, we cut down both sides of the front of the box with a box cutter. Then, we simply leaned it carefully against the wall while inside the box still (so it wouldn’t fall over).

Then it was easy to remove the big front tire and fender, rear bike rack, and the pedals and included tools.

You can expect to spend an hour attaching the front tire, handlebars, pedals, fender, and rear rack… less time if you are a bit handier. It was a bit hard to get to the handlebar bolts with an Allen wrench, so this accounts for some of the extra time we spent.

Overall, the Haoqi Long-Range Eagle was a fairly easy ebike to assemble since most of it was pre-assembled.

Should You Buy the Haoqi Eagle Electric Fat Bike?

It’s definitely worth your consideration if you want a solid fat tire ebike that’s fast and fun or if you plan to ride over rough terrain and off-road bike trails.

Without a doubt, I was way more comfortable on the Eagle’s 26 X 4-inch fat tires than on my current 20 X 3-inch tires. The Eagle’s tires easily gripped loose dirt and leaves and didn’t make me feel like I’d lose the bike from underneath me.

Although you won’t find high-end components, the Eagle has everything you need in an affordable adventure ebike, including a powerful motor, a longer 75-mile range, a 380-pound weight maximum, and a rear rack.

Hoaqi Electric Bike Review: Wrap-Up

Overall, the Haoqi Eagle electric fat bike is a fast, powerful electric bike that takes you anywhere you want to go. You can ride it down the street or on a dirt trail. Wherever you go, it feels sturdy, well-balanced, and comfortable to ride. Personally, I love how the tall 4″ fat tires and front suspension absorb shock, giving me the confidence to ride on slippery dirt and gravel.

Even with its few cons (see the list above), I find it to be a competitive fat tire e-bike with an affordable price.

Typical E-Bike Battery Life (+Tips To Make It Last Longer)

0
Male looking over e-bike battery

Every e-bike rider wants to make their e-bike battery last as long as possible. They’re expensive and therefore not easily replaced. So it helps to know the typical e-bike battery life and how to make it last as long as possible.

A typical e-bike battery life is around 4-5 years. On the shorter side, it is about 2 years, and on the longer side, it is up to 8 years. This is true if you have a good quality battery, use it properly, and ride it moderately.

Read on to find out more about how long your electric bike battery should last and battery warranties. Plus, learn the top tips to make your e-bike battery last longer.

How Long Do E-Bike Batteries Last?

On average, the typical e-bike battery life is around 4-5 years. And if you are using a good quality battery, you should at least expect a good range for many years if you ride moderately and take good care of it.

So, you don’t have to say goodbye to your e-bike battery after only 2 years. In fact, the high-quality Bosch battery brand suggests that the battery should be good for around 10 years or 1500 charge cycles. And even after 1500 charge cycles, there’s a chance that the battery will continue to work.

Did you know? Bosch offers a guarantee of 2 years or 500 charge cycles (whichever comes first) for their batteries.

However, the primary point to consider here is the gradual loss of battery capacity over time. In other words, as your battery ages, you can’t go as far as you used to go on one charge. The range of the battery will continue to decrease.

Read Here: How Far You Can Go With An E-Bike In One Charge?

What is the Average E-Bike Battery Range?

Now, the most important consideration of an e-bike’s battery life is discussed in terms of the charge cycles. On a rechargeable battery, a charge cycle comprises a complete charge plus a total discharge (from 100% to 0%).

On one complete charge cycle, the battery offers you a specific range of distance you can go, based on your riding style and how much pedal assist and throttle you use. Generally, when you pedal in a relaxed way, most e-bikes can run about 22-50 miles on one charge. This is the charge-holding capacity of the battery.

Over time, with usage, it starts to degrade, and the battery capacity slowly decreases.

So let’s suppose, on average, your new battery used to offer around 22 miles of riding distance on one charge. After one or two years, you should expect the battery to lose some of its capacity. So now, on a single charge, the battery may offer only a 20-mile range.

Two different e-bike batteries sitting side by side.
These two electric bike batteries are very different in size and one may have a longer battery life than the other.

What Are the Types of Electric Bike Batteries?

There are two different types of rechargeable batteries suitable for today’s e-bikes. These include lead-acid (PbA) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

Although some electric bicycles still use lead batteries, lithium-ion batteries are the most widely used for newer model e-bikes. Lithium batteries, in general, hold up to 1000 complete charge cycles.

How Many Miles Do Electric Batteries Offer In Their Entire Life?

A lithium battery typically offers over 1000 charging cycles before you need to replace them. Let’s suppose you are getting a 40-mile range from one full battery charge.

Calculating further, you can expect 40 (miles) X 1000 (cycles) = 40,000 miles of total range in the entire life of your battery.

Of course, these figures are just rough estimations of how far you can go on one battery over time, without refurbishing it or replacing it.

Some e-bikes can even run up to 100+ miles on a single charge. So if we calculate based on that long range, a typical e-bike battery should last about 100 X 1000 = 100,000 miles.

Different size ebike batteries will have different ranges and lengths of battery life.

Electric bike batteries are different from one another

Do E-Bike Batteries Wear Out Even If We Don’t Use Them?

Yes, e-bike batteries can wear out even if they’re not being used. It happens because of the phenomenon known as self-discharging, in which internal chemical reactions decrease the stored battery charge without any connection between electrodes or external circuits.

Batteries generate electricity because of the chemical reaction happening inside the cell. They then store the chemical energy and convert it into electrical energy.

However, it’s essential to note that a lithium-ion battery can gradually and eventually discharge even if you don’t use it. Further, if you store an electric bike battery for a long time, irreparable harm can occur because of internal chemical reactions.

Do E-Bike Batteries Have Warranties?

E-bike batteries typically have warranties, but they vary from brand to brand. The warranty period is usually based on a set time frame or amount of charge cycles the battery goes through.

Generally speaking, with batteries, you are offered the shortest warranty period. However, you may be able to purchase an extended warranty.

warranty spelled out in blocks

Here’s a general guide on the battery warranty period based on the battery type:

Battery Type:Typical Warranty Period:
Lead Acid Batteries6 Months
Li-Ion Batteries12-24 Months

Please note that this can vary based on the battery brand and quality, so check with battery-specific brand guidelines.

Here are some examples of battery warranty periods from different e-bike brands to give you an idea of what to expect:

Battery Brand:Warranty Period:
Rad Power Bikes1 Year
Aventon2 years
Electric Bike Company5 years!
Ride1Up1 year
Trek Bontrager2 years / 600 charge cycles (whichever comes first)
Lectric1 Year

Be sure to properly check the exact wording of warranty policies provided by e-bike manufacturers. That way, you will know what to expect and can add battery replacement or repair to your electric bike maintenance cost.

You can research this aspect on the official website of the brand of each e-bike battery.

How Do I Know When To Replace My E-Bike Battery?

The best way to know when you should replace your e-bike battery is when it doesn’t offer enough range.

With some high-quality batteries (like Bosch), there is an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) through which you can know the current battery capacity and how many charge cycles the battery has gone through.

But even if you have an inexpensive battery, you’ll experience your battery dying sooner than expected. Pay close attention to this to avoid any sudden surprises.

How Do I Make My E-Bike Battery Last Longer?

You can make your electric bike battery last longer by taking good care of it and following these battery care tips.

#1. Avoid Overcharging Your Battery

Overcharging can shorten an e-bike battery’s lifespan, as well as make it overheat, especially for older or cheaper batteries. In these cases, avoid leaving it plugged into a wall outlet longer than necessary.

Luckily, however, most modern e-bike batteries are equipped with smart functionality, which enables them to stop charging once the total charging capacity is achieved.

That said, energy in a battery slowly discharges on its own even when you don’t use it. And when you leave it on the battery charger, it can resume charging once again when the stored energy level decreases below a certain point.

Long story short, keeping the battery connected to the charger even after 100% is achieved won’t help keep it charged. The natural on-off cycle will ultimately lower the overall battery energy capacity when it doesn’t need further charging.

Find Out: Can You Charge An E-Bike Battery Overnight?

#2. Store Your Battery Away From Extreme Temperatures

Severe hot or cold temperatures can hurt the overall performance of the battery. Generally, lithium batteries prefer relatively cooler temperatures. So to maximize the battery life, be sure not to let it get too hot.

Generally, the optimal temperature for storing batteries is between 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

#3. Keep the Battery In A Dry Location

Humidity is another factor you should consider as it isn’t great for electrical components. Thus, ensure that your e-bike is stored in a dry location, preferably indoors, or in a garage or bike shed.

Also, inspect the battery contacts once in a while to keep an eye on corrosion and remove it whenever you notice it.

Male looking over e-bike battery

#4. Use The Boost Mode In Your E-Bike Minimally

Many e-bikes come with a boost mode, or throttle, that helps in accelerating to the max speed of your motor in just a few seconds.

Even though the boost mode is a great feature to use every once in a while, it discharges the e-bike battery quickly and minimizes its lifespan. So try to use it less often if your goal is to maximize the battery life!

#5. Avoid Fully Discharging Your Battery

For better battery health, you should avoid fully discharging your battery frequently.

It’s okay if the battery is fully discharged once in a while. But be mindful that it is harmful to discharge your lithium-ion e-bike battery to 0% on a regular basis or when leaving it in storage.

Instead, you should perform shallow recharges and discharges. This means it is better to charge your battery after every few rides to avoid full discharge. The shallow charges and discharges don’t put much stress on the battery and thus make it last longer.

Final Thoughts

In short, your e-bike’s battery should easily last three to five years with moderate riding and adequate battery maintenance.

However, if you take good care of it and use a high-quality battery, you can expect it to live even longer.

  • Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Distance: 24.5 km (15.22 miles)
  • Elevation: 24 meters (78 feet)

Dirty Bismark is a cross-country path that offers you the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, even though it passes quite close to nearby towns.

This route is one big loop that takes you through miles of treeless terrain, thus offering views of the Boulder Flatirons.

The dirt trail is rugged, but across flat land and mostly dirt. It suits riders on a regular mountain bike, as well as a fat tire ebike or one with all-terrain tires.

The trailhead begins in the west at grassy Marshal Hill and takes you through side roads and cattle gates. Natural surface trails turn into well-maintained gravel as you approach the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado.

A turnoff at Coalton Park Trailhead offers a steep climb up a dirt road to the top of the Davidson Mesa.

The descent from the Greenbelt Plateau is a single-track trail, but at least you will save electric motor power as you coast down the dusty mountain bike trail from the Davidson Mesa.

5. Mount Falcon Park Trail

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Duration: 4  hours
  • Distance: 11.9 km (7.4 miles)
  • Elevation: 24 meters (78.7 feet)
Mount-Falcon-Park-Trail

Mount Falcon Park Trail is challenging because of its elevation, but good for off-road capable e-bikes because of its hard-packed surface.

This lollipop-shaped route appeals to those who enjoy a slower, casual ride through urban trails and then into the woods.

The e-bike trailhead starts in Morrison, just west of Denver on Vine Street. There is an initial steep hill from the Mount Falcon Park parking lot that leads to the Castle Trail and it has designated bike lanes for mountain bikes and electric bikes.

Keep to your right to stay on the main, wider Castle trail that leads to panoramic views of the ruins of the Summer White House, also known as Mount Falcon Castle.  Then, continue following the urban trail system around the loop to find your way back to the parking lot.

6. Left Hand Canyon

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 52.7 km (32.72 miles)
  • Elevation: 24 meters (78 feet)

Left Hand Canyon takes you on a shaded scenic ride all along the Colorado Front Range. Note that unless you are riding a Class 3 motorbike, you are restricted to the designated bike lanes.

This day-long bike ride begins in Boulder Valley and takes you up the mountains to the mining town of Ward.

Enjoy views of the Arapaho plains and Roosevelt National Forest as you cruise through canyons on a flat paved road.

The road is steep during the final mile so make sure you’ve reserved enough battery life to complete the trek. Stop for refreshment in Ward, before looping and coasting back down the mountain (no battery power required!).

7. West Magnolia

  • Difficulty: Very Hard
  • Duration: 2.5 – 3.5 hours
  • Distance: 20.9 km (12.99 miles)
  • Elevation: 529 meters (1735 feet)

Roam through dark forests on your electric bike, by exploring the West Magnolia trail network. The trailhead is in the town of Nederland, just north of Boulder, Colorado.

These dirt trails are called “spaghetti trails” because they are irregular and connect to each with shortcuts. These multi-use trails best suit throttle-assisted electric bikes with good suspension and electric mountain bikes.

The first section, “Hobbit 1”, takes you through forests decimated by controlled burning ending with a view of Golden Gate State park.

Hobbit 1 drops you into the dark forest Hobbit 2, and ends at a campsite with a very steep hill.

Electric bikes can ascend Hobbit 3 to the Lost Meadow, which opens up into a valley with Aspen trees.

As you travel up the Rocks and Routes part of the trail, you will pass an abandoned school bus. At this point, you can turn your e-bike back the way you came or coast down the Look Out Trail at top speed back down to the parking areas.

It is the fact that these natural trails are quite rough, and without signage that makes West Magnolia one of the harder Colorado trails for e-bikes to ride.

Things to Know About Colorado Bike Trails

As in any part of the world, the weather can be unpredictable in Colorado Parks but you can check the condition of the e-bike trails before you depart.

Check for Trail System Closures

Road and path closures in Colorado
OSMP Trail Map- Check for closures before heading out.

Before you navigate mountain biking trails with steep ascents, such as the Dirty Bismarck trail, it is a good idea to check for closures. No electric bikes are allowed on trails damaged by avalanches, floods, fires, or storms.

Throttle-assisted electric bikes can give your e mountain bike a real boost as you mount the trails.

Mountain e-bikes with fat tires are best for riders that want to try this type of terrain.

Riding Motorized Vehicles and Bikes In Colorado Parks

As you’ve discovered, you can coast along a smooth paved road or dig your wheels in and spray some dirt in Colorado. However, be sure to maintain the 20mph speed limit The motorized trails in Colorado Parks are well maintained by the forest service to accommodate mountain bikes and electric bikes.

Many trails require an e-bike with all-terrain tires and suspension. Further, every ride is more comfortable with a suspension seat post.

Summary

Many of Colorado’s e-bike trails connect with each other. Therefore, it is well worth checking the trail map of your chosen route to see if you can fit in an additional hour of sightseeing or a visit to a local town.

Be sure to fully charge your e-bike battery before you leave so you can put in the extra mileage without running out of power. Further, make sure to check that your chosen trail is one where electric bikes are allowed.

Finally, it’s a good idea to take the number of the forest service or land management with you. This is in case your electric motor runs out of battery power and you need to be picked up from summit country.

Corbin Seats for Electric Bikes Review (USA Made)

0

If you’re familiar with Made in the USA Corbin seats, you know that you can get a comfortable, customized seat for a motorcycle. But now, you can choose from a variety of Corbin seats for electric bikes as well.

In this review, I’ll show you three unique USA-made electric bike seats from Corbin that can be customized to your liking:

  1. The Cruise Saddle
  2. The Active Saddle
  3. The Commuter Saddle

Find out which one you should buy and which one you shouldn’t.

Plus, I’ll help you decide which one fits your lifestyle best, whether it’s for fitness, commuting, or simply cruising the boardwalk. Then discover how to customize your own e-bike saddle.

Number 1. The Cruise Saddle for Electric Bikes

Customized burgundy and black bike seat
Corbin Seats: Cruise Saddle (Shown on a Rad Power Bike)

This electric bike seat will redefine what you think a bike seat should be! If you plan on cruising without much pedaling or have a short commute using the throttle, then the Corbin Cruise Saddle may be the best e-bike seat for you.

Taking a ride on this cruiser seat feels like you’re sitting on a full-size chair. I slid onto it with ease but had a little trouble believing I was actually sitting on a bike seat. It’s that huge! And my body conformed to it quickly.

Who is the Cruise Saddle Best For?

Here’s what I discovered when test riding: This electric bike seat is best for cruising without pedaling much.

Now, keep in mind that I’m around 5 feet 1 inch and smaller than the average rider. I really couldn’t pedal comfortably because the nose of the seat was just too wide for me. My husband Marc, who’s 5 feet 8 inches was comfortable in the saddle and could pedal occasionally, but also agreed that he wouldn’t want to pedal long-distance.

That being said, a larger rider or someone with longer legs might have no problem pedaling as needed.

But this is why Corbin calls it the Cruise Saddle… it’s made for enjoying the ride without putting in a lot of work. So, if you want an electric bike to cruise the beach boardwalk or easily get around town (perhaps to use on a no-pedal e-bike or moped), then you’ll probably find this comfortable bike seat to be worth it.

However, if you’re a fitness lover or want to get in a good workout on your electric bike, pay close attention to the next ebike seat because it could be perfect for you!

Number 2: The Active Saddle E-Bike Seat

Blue electric bike with burgundy saddle
Corbin Seat: Active Saddle for Electric Bikes (shown on the Ride1Up Core-5)

The ingenious Corbin Active Saddle is “nearly noseless”. This helps you avoid chafing and lets you pedal without a long saddle nose getting in your way. But there’s just enough of a shape on this oversized bike seat to keep you nicely centered.

This seat is made in the same way as other Corbin bike seats except that, instead of springs, it has two rigid, rubber bumpers.

After riding on it, this design makes sense: This is because you need to ride with the saddle tilted slightly downwards to be able to actively pedal yet keep your backside firmly planted.

I had to readjust my seat to angle down a bit after my first ride. Otherwise, I would’ve had to continue to sit on the edge of the saddle to pedal, instead of being fully seated.

Who is the Active Saddle Best For?

It’s best for athletic types and fitness-oriented riders who want to pedal hard and fast or maximize their exercise. It’s not for off-roading or difficult riding courses. But it will also offer a pretty sweet ride on your stationary bike or in a spin class.

Now, if either of the first two Corbin seats doesn’t seem right for you, there is a solution. Although the last is not always the best, I believe in this case it is, because I think this will be the best Corbin seat for most of you.

Number 3: The Corbin Commuter Saddle

Corbin Seat on an Electric Bike
Corbin Seat for Electric Bikes: Commuter Saddle (shown on my RadMini, now the Rad Power Bikes RadExpand)

Just as wide and supportive as the Cruise Saddle, this electric bike seat lets you actively pedal on low to medium pedal assist and enjoy a good cruise as well.

Designed just like the Cruise Saddle to maximize comfort and healthy body support, the primary differences are the narrower nose and slightly flatter saddle. These features give you the ability to ride with as much pedal assist as you desire for as long as you’d like… or until your e-bike battery runs out!

Who is the Commuter Saddle Best For?

The Corbin Commuter Seat is the best bike saddle for you if you bought an ebike for commuting, utility, pleasure, or overall health and fitness. Most ebike riders will find this to be the perfect oversized saddle for daily riding.

In this case, and if you’re an active rider, the Active Saddle seat will be best for you. But if the Active seat doesn’t meet your needs, you probably shouldn’t buy one of these three Corbin seats for electric bikes.

Note: If you’re a small e-bike rider like myself, you may feel some resistance against the seat after pedaling for a bit. It feels a bit like the seat is still too long for those with shorter legs. Thus, the seat is a little too big for a petite person to pedal on long-distance.

I think this saddle would work well on a commuter bike as well as a comfortable fat bike but not an electric mountain bike.

How to Design Your Own Custom Corbin Seat

Now let’s get into how to choose your Corbin bike seat materials to make it the custom bike seat of your dreams. Keep in mind that you will order and receive only the seat. I’d recommend adding a suspension seatpost for total comfort.

Once you’ve decided on the best electric bike saddle from Corbin, head to the “Order” page. This is where you’ll design your custom ebike saddle using leather or vinyl materials, just like I did. Please note that Corbin believes vinyl materials will hold up better for your electric bike due to friction from pedaling.

Use the Design It Button

When you begin customizing, I highly recommend you use the “Design It” button under the “Configurator”, rather than placing a “Quick Order”. This will help you see the colors and materials you’re getting and how they work together. After all, you’re getting a high-quality saddle to use for years to come, so it’s best to use their visual seat design tool.

Once you click on “Design It”, you’ll see an image of the ebike seat. Click on it to open the customization box. Under each option, you can click on different colors and materials and watch the seat change right in front of you (be sure to give it a few seconds if needed).

brown leather e-bike seat with color options
Corbin Seat design- Trim colors

Choose E-Bike Seat Options

Make sure to select a material for the Seat, Sides, Trim, and a Logo color for the rear of the seat. You can choose from a variety of black or brown materials but also some very unique or bright colors. Consider that you’ll be sitting on the seat, so whatever color you choose will be covered up when riding and it’ll be mostly the sides and trim showing.

You can even create multiple saddle designs and download or email them to ask for opinions before you purchase. And, if you’re not sure about the colors or material, just contact Corbin support and ask them to send some material samples.

To give you an idea, I used the same colors and materials on all three seats you see in this video. Here are the colors and materials I used:

    • Burgundy Vinyl (Seat or Sides)

    • Asphalt Vinyl (Seat or Sides)

    • Charcoal Metalflake (Trim)

    • Medium Silver Logo

Example of just a few colors… there are many more to choose from!

What Makes Corbin Seats Special?

Well, besides being USA-made e-bike seats, Corbin created a large ergonomic seating area to maximize body-to-seat contact. This helps disperse your weight and minimize uncomfortable pressure. And it promotes better posture and reduces joint stress, allowing you to ride longer.

Second, Corbin’s e-bike seats are engineered using their time-tested comfort cell foam and special Fibertech material that’s rigid and waterproof, making it feel firm but supportive.

And third, they’re typically assembled with springs that act as a buffer against hard bumps and poor road conditions.

In fact, because of its design, Corbin claims that their seats may even be eligible for purchasing through your HSA or FSA spending accounts. I’m unable to verify this for each individual, but it might be worth checking this out!

Final Thoughts

In this saddle review, you’ll discover three Corbin seats for electric bikes that serve different purposes: one for cruising, one for active pedaling, and one for doing a little of both!

No matter which one you choose, they’re all made with the same sturdy comfort foam and special Fibertech materials, that’ll keep you comfortable and hold up when riding. Plus, they are USA-made and larger than you’ll get from most other oversized bike seats on Amazon.

Some of their e-bikes have removable batteries, including the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 350 Mountain Bike and the Ancheer 16-inch Folding Commuter Bike, making the e-bike easier to charge and clean.

Continue reading to find out more about how these selected Ancheer e-bikes differ from each other, especially when it comes to the design of the frame, the position of the handle grip, tire size, and fenders.

Ancheer – Company Background

Ancheer Bikes (established in 2018) are made in China and shipped to the company warehouse in Los Angeles, California. This gives this brand an advantage when it comes to being able to offer lower prices for its products.

Ancheer’s affordable bikes suit the inner city commuter who travels less than 20 miles a day and can live with a 250w to 350w battery.

The company also makes sophisticated yet inexpensive electric mountain bikes with fat tires and powerful 500W batteries that can go a long distance and handle a rough uphill trail.

Ancheer 16-inch Wheel 250W Folding City Commuter Electric Bike – Lightest Portable Folding Commuter E-Bike

Price: $520

Product Specification

Battery: 36F 8AH Lithium Ion Battery

Derailleur: LED 3-speed; turn-key and press Power Switch

Motor:  250W

Brakes: Back and rear disc brakes

Frame:  Waterproof carbon steel

Weight Capacity:  220 lbs.

Who is This Ancheer Electric Bike Suitable For?

The Ancheer 16-inch Wheel 250W Folding City Commuter Electric Bike is for the urban rider who bikes to work but may have to take the train or subway part way.

It also appeals to the day-tripper who likes to explore local trails and parks because it packs up so neatly in a car.

Best Features

This nifty portable electric bike has high T-bar handles and strong axles and fenders. It comes in either white or black. The frame is made of strong high, carbon steel that protects the finish from flying gravel and slush.

The wheels are only 16 inches in diameter, so it is better for motoring than pedaling. The small wheel diameter requires extra pedaling to cover as much ground as a 20-inch wheel, but the 250w high-speed brushless motor can easily take over.

The powerful 36 V lithium battery charges in just 4-6 hours. The removable battery can be charged separately from the e-bike, allowing you to store it in a safe, dry place.

Other Considerations

Low battery wattage limits the range of an e-bike. The 250w battery can only reach a maximum speed of 15.5 miles per hour. The Ancheer 16-inch Wheel 250W Folding City Commuter Electric Bike AMA5639 can only travel 15 miles before it needs to be recharged.

This e-bike has a weight capacity of 220 lbs, so it’s really not suitable for individuals who weigh over 200 lbs. Also, it is so small that it is not any more powerful than a scooter.

Pros

  • Comes in 2 colors
  • Collapses in seconds
  • Lightweight carbon steel frame
  • Removable lithium battery
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • A low maximum speed of 15.5 mph
  • Limited range of 15 miles

This cruiser’s most unique feature is its low mid-bar, lower seat, and parallel handlebars associated with a regular women’s cruiser e-bike. It is best suited to riders who have difficulty swinging their leg over the high horizontal bar of a mountain bike or regular electric bike.

The attached front LED headlight makes it ideal for riders who like to cruise around bike paths after dark.

Best Features

The large capacity 12.5 Ah lithium-ion battery allows you a range of up to 22 miles. The 250W motor lets you go as fast as 15 mph.

The 26” wheels and 1.95” high-volume e-cruiser offer riders a smooth, safe ride, and the wide set handlebars and adjustable handlebars allow you to find your most comfortable riding posture.

The Ancheer 20 Inch Wheel 500W Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike is meant for riders who like to explore rugged terrain. However, its larger, fat tires also offer commuters a smoother ride over sewer grates and streetcar tracks.

Best Features

Whether pedaling or using the 500W motor, this mountain e-bike takes you further than most and does not limit the rider to any terrain.

The 12.5Ah battery gives you a range of at least 18 to 40 miles, depending on how often you use any of the 5 levels of pedal assistance.

This high-performance Ancheer electric mountain bike boasts professional-speed gearing and 4.0 fat wheels that assist with riding on sand, snow, gravel, packed dirt, and minor uphill trails.

The bike’s most unique feature is that the 20″ fat wheels and tires have a high-quality anti-slip surface, which makes it more of an all-weather bike.

The professional 6-speed Shimano transmission on this e-mountain bike guarantees a smooth ride. Front and rear disc brakes allow precise stopping, even during wet conditions or descending steep slopes.

Ancheer Electric Bikes Summarized

If you are a commuter, you don’t need an Ancheer electric mountain bike. You’ll be happy with one of their electric commuter bikes

Assuming you don’t travel more than 20 miles a day, a less expensive e-bike with 250-watt battery life will serve you well. Thus, you should consider the Ancheer 16-inch or 18-inch Wheel 250W Folding City Commuter Electric Bike.

Check Electric Bike Reviews

Before you buy an electric bicycle with an electric motor, be sure to check out the electric bike reviews, as they offer great value when it comes to assessing any Ancheer product.

Below is our review of the Ancheer electric bike!

Fenders Matter

If you live in a rainy city or plan to ride along muddy trails, be sure to buy an Ancheer e-bike with fenders to protect it from the snow, rain, and splashes of dirt.

This Ancheer electric bike review found that the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 250W Commuting Electric Cruiser Bike and Ancheer 20-inch Wheel Folding City Commuter Electric Bike are good value, offering protection from the mud when off-road riding.

Consider A Removable Battery

If you are planning on riding your Ancheer e-bike in all kinds of weather or simply just like to wash your bike a lot, it is recommended to buy an e-bike with a removable lithium battery such as the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 250W Commuting Electric Cruiser Bike with Removable 12.5Ah Battery (AMA5685), and the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 500W Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike with Removable 36V 12.5Ah Battery (AMA5688).

Watch Out for Weight Capacity

Consider your weight and height before buying an Ancheer e-bike and if you will be carrying any backpacks or groceries on it.

Some electric bikes such as the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 500W Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike, and the Ancheer AE4 20-inch Wheel Folding City Commuter Electric Bike have a greater weight capacity than others.

Affordability

If affordability is an issue, this Ancheer electric bike review found that a mini e-bike, rather than a full-size electric cruiser bike or a mountain bike is a better choice. The motorbike batteries are smaller, making the electric bike less expensive.

More expensive electric bikes have additional features, such as a lighter aluminum alloy frame, a bright led headlamp, and mechanical disc brakes on both the front and rear wheels.

They also tend to have several modes of pedal assist, a rear hub motor, and an adjustable, removable down tube.

Long Or Short Range

If you want an Ancheer electric bike with the most range, our electric mountain bike review found that the Ancheer 26-inch Wheel 500W Fat Tire Electric Mountain Bike is a good choice.

Usually, the more powerful the Ancheer electric bike battery is, the more you are going to pay.

Comfort and Control Matter Most

Finally, consider what kind of bicycle frame, seat position, and seat height makes you feel the most at ease on an e-bike.

Everything, including the position of the hand brakes, the styles of the pedals, and the position of your e-motor bike digital display, is very important, especially if it is your first e-bike.

Once that Ancheer electric bike is powered on, you need to be in as much physical control of it as possible. Luckily, this affordable manufacturer of e-bikes offers many ergonomic commuter and mountain bike frames that provide comfort whether you have it in pure electric mode or are riding it like a regular bike.

Is Cleaning an E-Bike Chain Different Than a Regular Chain?

0
Electric bike chain and derailleur that needs cleaning.

Bike chains tend to deteriorate quickly when they’re not properly maintained. As such, it’s crucial to clean them often to ensure they’re in good shape. If you’ve always ridden a regular bike and decided to switch to an e-bike, you’re probably wondering if cleaning an e-bike chain is any different.

Cleaning an e-bike chain isn’t too different from cleaning a regular chain. An e-bike chain is a lot sturdier and has a different structure, but the process of cleaning it is similar and involves degreasing, wiping off the degreaser, and lubricating the chain.

In the rest of this article, I will discuss how to clean an e-bike chain and a regular one. I will also highlight how both processes are similar and in what aspects they differ from each other.

How To Clean an E-Bike Chain

When you clean and lubricate your e-bike chain, you extend the life of the chain and save costs on frequent repairs and replacements. Cleaning your bike chain also prevents noise as dirty chains cause friction between the teeth of the bike, which in turn leads to noise while riding.

You will need the following items to clean your bike:

  • A dry rag
  • A degreasing product
  • A sealable container
  • A good lubricant

Here’s a breakdown of how to clean your e-bike chain thoroughly.

Follow the steps below for a thorough e-bike chain cleaning:

Step 1: Remove the Chain From Your Electric Bicycle

For a deep cleaning, start by removing the bike chain. If your chain has a master link, you can break it with your hand or use a chain-breaking tool.

The challenge with breaking a master link is that it gets weaker when it’s removed too many times. A weak master link may cause your chain to snap in the middle of a ride, so it’s always advisable to use quick links because you can use them multiple times.

Step 2: Degrease the E-Bike Chain

After removing the chain, the next step is to degrease, which removes grime and dirt from the chain. To degrease your e-bike chain, pour a high-grade degreaser into a sealable plastic container.

Next, place the bike chain in the container, ensuring it is completely submerged in the degreaser. Firmly seal the container with its lid and shake it for two to three minutes. If the bike chain is dirty, pour out the degreaser after the first round, replace it with a fresh degreaser, and repeat the shaking.

Leave the chain in the degreaser for the duration mentioned by the manufacturer before removing it.

Step 3: Wipe Off the Degreaser

Once you take the chain out, run a dry rag over the chain to wipe off the grease, paying special attention to the chain links. Do this multiple times to remove as much of the degreaser as possible. Finally, rinse the chain with lukewarm water to remove any leftover degreaser.

Step 4: Reattach the Bike Chain

This is the chain on an e-bike that should be lubricated regularly

After wiping off the degreaser, reattach the chain to the electric bike and place the bike in a location where the chain can air-dry. You must allow the chain to dry out fully before you lubricate it. Lubricating a wet bike chain can lead to rusting, which will eventually cause it to wear out.

Step 5: Lubricate the EBike Chain

For best results, use heavy-duty lubricants during wet seasons and light, dry lubricants during summer. Avoid using bike oil, motor oil, or petroleum jelly because they are not ideal for electric bike chains.

To lubricate your bike chain, coat both sides of the links with lubricant, ensuring you get to the pins inside the links. Avoid dripping lubricant on e-bike components other than the chain. Then make a few rotations by pedaling backward in slow motion. Leave the lube on the chain for five minutes and wipe off any excess lubricant with a dry rag.

How To Clean a Regular Bike Chain

The cleaning process for a regular bike chain is similar to that of an e-bike chain. Here’s what you need to do to clean a traditional chain:

  1. Degrease the bike chain to remove dirt, mud, and grime.
  2. Rinse off the degreaser with warm water and leave the chain to air dry.
  3. Lubricate the chain with the right lube.
  4. Clean off excess lube with a dry rag.

Maintaining a bike chain properly ensures its durability, and cleaning an e-bike or regular chain requires the same process. Irrespective of the type, it’s vital to clean your bike chain regularly and even more frequently if you ride through muddy or dusty terrains.

For quick cleaning, spray a degreaser on your bike chain, wipe it off, and rinse any residue with water. Ensure the chain is completely dry before you apply the lubricant.

A more thorough cleaning process will require you to detach the bike chain from the bike, shake and soak it in a degreaser, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely before lubricating it.

It’s a good idea to know how to clean your entire e-bike when cleaning the chain.

Key Takeaways

A dirty e-bike bike chain impairs gear shifting, leads to squeaky rides, and causes extensive damage over time. As such, it’s essential to clean your chain regularly. You can do this in the same way you would clean a regular bike.

It’s best to do a quick clean before every ride to ensure the chain remains in good shape. And you must perform a deep clean every three months to eliminate the worst of the dust and grime.
