How To Transport An E-Bike for Travel

Transporting an e-bike can be a challenge due to its heavy weight and large size. However, there are easy ways to travel with your e-bike in your car, attached to your car, or by plane as long as you have the right accessories.

Since most e-bikes are bulky and weigh anywhere from 38-70 pounds, depending on the battery and motor size and any parts added to the bike, you’ll need to take this into consideration

How to Put It In the Car

Many e-bike models are foldable and portable! By purchasing a folding electric bike, you’ll be able to take it with you camping, to a trail on the beach, or anywhere that you can drive closer to first and be able to pop it right back out of the car. 

Pedal-assisted folding bikes can range anywhere from $800-$4,000 USD, although most fall in the $1,500-$2,000 range. These types of bikes work just as well as any electric bike model, but they are more compact and much better for transporting or even storing in a smaller space if you need to! 

From first-hand experience, make sure you consider the weight of your bike if you intend to lift it into the car, even if it’s a folding bike. My RadMini electric bike weighs almost 70 lbs. I certainly can’t lift it into the car and most people will need some help.

If you don’t have a foldable bike, there are some other ways to possibly put your bike in a car. You can always try removing the front or back tires, which will definitely allow for more space. If you are able to put your back seats down, placing the bike diagonally will help as well.

Make sure not to place e-bikes upside down as it may damage the handles! And protect the electric motor and other delicate components with a blanket or cushion.

Securing Your Electric Bike in a Truck Bed

Another great way to transport e-bikes is with a pickup truck. Although it sounds easy to throw a bike in the back of a truck, some caution is required. It’s important to strap your bike down in your truck bed to avoid it sliding around or getting damaged from moving too much.

The best way to secure electric bikes in the back of pickup trucks is to use bungee cords or a soft strap. Ratchet straps are actually not as good at securing and may pop off due to the lack of optimal tension.

E-bikes can also be hung over the edge of your truck if you have a tale bike pad to protect the truck. If it’s raining or damp outside, you can cover your electric bike with a blanket or tarp in order to prevent rusting and protect the electric motor and other components from damage.

Travel Racks for E-Bikes

In general, e-bikes are more difficult to attach to your vehicle than regular bikes. They will likely need special car bike racks because they are larger, heavier, and have delicate electric parts.

So, it’s important to find racks that have good wheel support and can handle the weight of electric bikes. A pro tip is to remove the battery and store it inside your car before you mount it in order to reduce the weight (and to protect the battery from outside elements)! 

How to use a roof hatch with electric bikes

You can attach e-bikes to the roof, also known as a roof hatch. This is one of the more popular and secure ways of transporting traditional bikes. This way can work for electric bikes as well but can be a bit riskier. I’d definitely recommend having one or two others help you lift it and making sure it is strongly strapped down so that it can’t move and scratch or dent the top of your car.

How to use a hitch rack for e-bikes

The best method for mounting e-bikes is a hitch rack, which is installed on the back of your vehicle. This type of rack is the most secure and easiest option for mounting e-bikes.

However, a hitch rack may be slightly more risky due to the possibility of someone rear-ending your car. And they can be more expensive than traditional bike racks.

Here are some brands and models that are good for mounting electric bikes onto cars. Most of these options can mount 2 bikes:

• Hollywood Racks Sport Rider- They even have a version that fits fat tire electric bikes
• Saris SuperClamp EX 2-Bike
• Swagman Escapee
• Yakima Hitch Bike Rack- Fits 2 Fat Tire electric bikes
• Hollywood RV Rider- Good for mounting to RV’s or trailer homes

Travel Trailer

A final alternative for transporting electric bikes is to use a 2-inch trailer hitch and attach a small trailer to your car. This will make transporting more than one bike easier and more secure. However, towing a trailer everywhere you go might negate any of the benefits of using this method!

Ship Your Electric Bike

Have you thought about shipping directly to your electric bike vacation or touring destination?

This could be a substantial expense but the convenience could make up for it. If only a portion of your travel involves a bike tour, you probably don’t want to be stuck carting around your e-bikes for the entire trip.

You can actually ship it to a holding location, like FedEx, and pick it up when you’re ready!

Can You Take an E-Bike on a Plane?

Unfortunately, most airlines do not allow bike batteries to be taken on flights because of the danger of any lithium battery. Batteries are a fire hazard and because lithium is highly flammable. In general, any battery larger than 100Wh is prohibited on a plane. 

However, there are ways around this. Electric bikes themselves are allowed, so you can always try shipping your battery separately to your location or renting a new battery once you are there. Or, you can bring smaller batteries that are less than 100WH, but they probably won’t work very well. 

It’s still a good idea to call your airline beforehand to double-check any questions you may have about bringing your electric bike, as some may allow batteries up to 160WH or have other suggestions for you. 

Where to Travel in the USA With E-Bikes

In general, the USA is a fantastic place to travel with your electric bike. Many cities throughout the US have developed bike paths and bike-friendly roads while there are many public-owned lands and national parks that encourage riding your e-bike.

This is by far the best part of this travel guide… deciding where to go! And what’s great about this is that you can easily discover where to ride your e-bike with Google Maps. Just select your destination or route and use the menu to click on “Bicycling”. You’ll be able to locate bike-friendly paths like in Monterey, CA below in an instant!

Are E-Bikes Allowed in US National Parks?

National Parks are probably one of the first places that people think of taking their e-bikes. As of 2019, e-bikes are officially allowed in US National Parks! However, riding them on hiking trails is still prohibited. As long as you’re able to ride them on the main roads, then you can definitely take your bikes to stunning places like Yosemite National Park in California!

Here are some of the best bike-friendly National Parks for riding e-bikes: 

• Crater Lake National Park in Oregon
• Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming
• Everglades National Park in Florida
• Saguaro National Park in Arizona
• Acadia National Park in Maine
• Glacier National Park in Montana 
• Death Valley National Park in California
• Yosemite National Park in California
• Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado
• Canyonlands National Park in Utah
• Redwood National Park in California 

All of these parks are not only beautiful and have breathtaking views, but they all have paths and roads that are great for cycling or a bike tour. You can easily ride your bike to explore rather than walking, driving, or taking a bus!

Bike Trails and Roads

E-bikes are allowed on most traditional bike paths and roads in the United States, so it’s not hard to find travel destinations that are perfect for riding.

Just make sure to look up the local laws for riding a specific trail or road in any area as they may differ depending upon your e-bike’s classification and more.

Here are some amazing US cities to ride your e-bike in:

• San Francisco, CA. This is a great city for commuting and traveling around on a bike. It’s a smaller city with plenty of riding room, and e-biking is easier than driving a car.
• Portland, Oregon. This is considered to be the best bicycle city in the United States! 
• Austin, Texas. This is a great city for traveling in and considered one of the best cycling cities in America.
• Tucson, Arizona. Because this is surrounded by desert, there are plenty of open roads to ride on, and has over 700 miles of designated bike paths.
• San Diego, CA. This is great for biking scenic beach routes and parks. 
• Washington DC. The Capitol of our country and great for traveling around on electric bikes.
• Missoula, Montana. Montana is a beautiful state with lots of open roads and is also home to the Adventure Cycling Association. 
• Boulder, Colorado. This is near the Rockies and is a stunning place for any bicyclist. Find other great Colorado e-bike trails here!
• Monterey, California. A beautiful beach town with miles of bike trails right along the ocean (one of the best cities for a bike tour iin my opinion). 
• Eugene, Oregon. A quaint city with paved roads specifically for biking around and plenty of space.

Best States for E-Bike Riding

Although e-biking is legal in all 50 states, some states have stricter rules for riding while some are definitely more “e-bike friendly” in terms of having appropriate space, trails, and scenic routes for riding! 

There are three classification systems that a majority of states in the USA follow, all with a maximum motor of 750W:

• Class One: Allows e-bikes that are pedal-assist only, has no throttle, and a maximum speed of 20mph. 
• Class Two: Allows e-bikes with throttle assist, but still a maximum speed of 20mph. 
• Class Three: Allows e-bikes that are pedal-assist only, has no throttle, but allows a maximum speed of 28mph. 

The states that follow the same general rules and stick within these classification systems include:

Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. 

While these next states don’t follow this three-tiered classification system, they do have specific rules for electric bikes that you should look up before traveling and riding here:  

Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Vermont.

The remaining 10 states have unclear e-bike laws and it is important to research your state specifically to see what their laws are. These include: 

Alabama, Alaska, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. 

Each state may also have different age limits for riding e-bikes or helmet requirements, so be sure to look up whatever state you live in just to double-check the laws. 

Electric Bike Travel Accessories

There are several accessories you’ll need when traveling with your electric bike. In addition to a battery and charger, you’ll need a specialized bike tool kit, tire repair kit, and cargo storage as well other optional items like a bicycle travel case or folding pedals.

Do I Need a Travel Case for My Electric Bike?

Other than the battery, this could be the most expensive item you’ll need to take your e-bike traveling with you. At an average price of $500 or more, you’ll be spending a lot to protect your also expensive bike.

The question is, do you need a rolling cover for airplane transport or a hard-sided case to put on the top or back of your car? Or maybe both? If you’ll be traveling where it’s rainy, snowy, or windy, you’ll want to make sure your bike is protected. Thus, just attaching them to the back of your car is not a good option.

Do I Need an Extra Charger?

Let’s face it… you have to take your battery with you wherever you go. You’ll need a lot of battery power for a full day or overnight bike tour. But you do have a couple of options:

1. Get a lighter-than-typical battery that still works with your e-bike model. Bosch has a smaller and lighter charger that works well for travelers. It’s only 160mm long and 75mm wide as compared to a standard charger which is likely 190mm long and 86mm wide. Further, the Bosch charger only weighs 60 grams as compared to an 800-gram regular charger.
   
   When shopping for a charger, whether it’s a second travel charger being purchased or you’re getting one for regular use, you’ll want to consider the charging time. Bosch’s smaller battery can take up to twice as long to charge, which could be a problem if you’re making a quick stop while traveling to charge it.
   
2. Frankly, it might just be more efficient to just take your own regular battery along during your travels. You could even buy a second one just for this purpose. Of course, at an average cost of $500, that’s a pretty expensive way to go!

Get a Bicycle Tool Kit

Although this can be a little bulky, a tool kit made just for bikes is a necessity. A bike tool kit will have several items to fix specific parts on your bike that a regular tool kit won’t have. This includes a pedal wrench and various other wrenches and allen keys that’ll fit your bike’s nuts and bolts.

Get a Tire Inflator and Repair Patch Kit

This is not optional! Hopefully, you already carry these with you wherever you ride. However, taking care of your tires becomes even more important when on the road or far from home. Keeping your tires inflated properly will provide a more efficient ride and protect your tires.

And if you end up with a flat tire and can’t find a local hardware or bike store with a tire repair kit, you could be in a world of trouble. Pushing your heavy e-bike 20 or 30 miles is not going to be fun!

What About Folding or Removable Pedals?

If you’re traveling by car or in an RV, folding pedals could really come in handy. Being able to fold up or remove one or both of your bike pedals can help your bike fit better on a bike carrier or in your RV (one less thing to trip over).

Plus, it’ll be harder for a thief to ride off with your bike!

Cargo Bag with Food and Personal Items

If you’re traveling where you’ll be riding trails and roads in the backcountry, you’re going to need to carry more gear than usual. The best way to go about packing your cargo bag is to always assume that you could get stuck somewhere unexpected.

Here’s what you should have in your bag:

• Additional layers of clothing
• Small tire tube repair kit
• meals or snacks
• sunscreen
• medications
• keys to e-bikes and hotel or lodgings
• extra water

Bike Locks for Security

Even if you already have a bike lock that you use, it’s a good idea to re-evaluate your security needs for traveling. Your e-bike will be at a higher risk of getting stolen because there will be many additional opportunities for thieves… at the campground, while you’re sightseeing, when you stop to use the restroom, etc. So, make sure you have the very best lock (you might consider using two or more at a time).

You’ll want to secure your e-bike to your car or RV and also be able to lock it up during your ride. A high-security U-Lock or a heavy-weight chain lock is a good bet due to its incredibly strong steel. The downside to both, however, is that they’re pretty heavy (3-4 lbs) and will add 3-4 lbs of weight onto your bike, which is already heavy due to the electric components.

Although a little heavier than the u-lock, a chain lock is far more flexible, making it easier to lock up your e-bike just about anywhere.

Battery Charging on the Road

Always plan ahead for keeping your battery charged while riding long distances (if camping or traveling, you may be able to charge using a generator). (if camping or traveling, you may be able to charge using a generator).

You’ll be able to charge your e-bike and protect your battery by doing a little research before you set off. Find out where the charging powerpoints are and what amenities are located on your riding path. Then check the local weather for rain, snow, and wind.

Where can I charge my e-bike?

As long as you remember to bring your battery with you, you’ll be able to charge it, even in places you wouldn’t have thought of.

Of course, you’ll always want to recharge your battery when you’re done riding at night and back where you’re staying. But you’ll also find powerpoints at coffee shops, airports and train stations, and gas stations. And, if you ask nicely, you might be allowed to charge it in a business office, church, or other retail location.

If you’re camping, plan ahead! It’s best to stay at a camp spot that has power outlets… because some don’t!

How to protect your battery from the elements

Just as you’d protect your battery at home, you’ll need to take care of it while traveling. Doing so may be even more challenging on the road due to temperature and humidity changes in your car and while riding.

Still, you should do everything you can to keep your battery well above freezing temperatures and preferably above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The ideal temperature is always between 32-68 degrees, no matter where you’re traveling. If you’re riding in a humid location, make sure to take your battery into your air-conditioned hotel or condo as soon as possible.

A good rule is to just not leave your battery outside or in the car without you… remove it and bring it with you. If the temperature and moisture in the air are comfortable where you are, then your battery will be in good shape.

Should You Bring an Extra Battery?

Ideally, having an extra battery while you’re traveling is a great idea. You won’t have to worry about not finding a charging station when you need it or accidentally forgetting to charge it. And if you’re a semi-professional rider, you might use both batteries on one ride!

But you will have to pay for two batteries and carry the extra bulk and weight of two batteries. So you’ll have to decide whether it’s worth it. I’d say that it’s definitely worth it if you’ll be riding daily and if riding your e-bike is the focus of your trip.

E-Bike Touring in the USA

If you’ve never traveled with your e-bike before, it’s probably a good idea to get some experience doing so before deciding to ride longer than a few hours. An overnight electric bike tour is generally for more experienced riders who want to see vast amounts of the USA on their e-bike.

Generally, bike touring is when you ride all day and spend at least one night somewhere. Many riders will tour for days or weeks on end. Food and supplies can be carried on your e-bike or in a car that meets up with you in various places to offer you food, respite, and overnight gear.

Riding an electric bike is an exceptionally wonderful way to begin touring. First, electric bikes really level out the fitness abilities of each rider so that it’s easier to keep up with one another. One person can ride hard and fast but their traveling companion can easily catch up. if they fall behind.

And if you’re concerned that it might be too hard, you know your electric bike will do the job for you.

That being said, your main concern will need to be about the battery. If you expect to use motor power to ride for a long day or to keep up with others, you’ll need to have a good, strong battery. You should also plan ahead to find charging spots on the road so that you won’t get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

When touring with an electric bike in the United States, it’s a very good idea to have a second, fully-charged battery, especially due to the vast areas of open land, deserts, and mountains. Additionally, take into consideration all of the travel accessories mentioned previously… because you’re going to need them!

Renting E-Bikes

Don’t want to lug your ebike around the United States? Many bike shops rent electric bikes as an option for a slightly increased charge over a normal bike. And you can still follow this e-bike travel guide whether you own or rent a bike.

On average, you can rent an electric bike in the USA for $20 per hour or $75 per day, depending upon whether you are in a popular destination or a large city. Professional bike tour companies will also rent you an e-bike along with a self-guided or group tour.

Electric Bike Day Rentals

In California, a popular place for riding because of the nice weather, rental shops charge around $20-$25 per hour to rent a bike, while the full day can be around $75-$80. And you’ll probably be given the option to add on equipment such as an extra battery or hitch rack for your car for $5-$10 each per day.

Some major cities have electric bikes available on the street. These are connected to an app and can be hopped onto anywhere you can find one. Usually for these, you pay a certain amount of money per minute you use the bike, but it is perfect if you need to get somewhere quickly. It’s also a great way to try out an electric bike for the first time!

Every county and state is different, so it’s a good idea to look up bike rentals near you. If you‘re going to a popular tourist area, you’re likely to find some quality electric bike rental shops that will show you everything you need to know to ride.

E-Bike Tour: Self-Guided or Group

Along with a traditional bike tour, many places now offer an electric bike tour! You can choose a self-guided one or a group one, however, in most cases, the group tours will cost a bit more. Prices may range from $700 for self-guided to $1,500 for a group bike tour and more, depending on the location and length of the tour.

Yet, you might still prefer to stay on paved trails, even as an e-bike rider.  Not only do asphalt and concrete bike trails give you a smooth ride, but they also allow you to see more and adventure further. However, finding the best paved roads for e-bike riding is time-consuming and requires digging through article after article. 

So, to make it easy, I’ve compiled a list of the best places to ride electric bikes in the USA… and they’re all paved trails!

First, I’ve put together a table of the best paved bike trails in the U.S., listing their location, name, distance one-way, weather, amenities along the route, and what makes each one special for a long ride on your e-bike.

Then, keep reading to learn other important information about each e-bike trail, including where to find the trailhead for each one.

1. Shining Sea Bikeway (Massachusetts)

This amazing rail-trail bike path is perfect for starting to explore riding your electric bike long distances. But it’s also totally worth it for any e-bike rider.

You’ll ride wooded areas, through a saltwater marsh, past beautiful rivers, and get a scenic view on the section of Cape Cod seaside. If starting in Falmouth, you’ll end your ride overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with the opportunity to take a swim or relax on the beach.

I’ve listed this as one of the best places to ride electric bikes in the USA because it was named after the “America the Beautiful” song lyrics…. And because it includes some of the most diverse terrains you’ll see on a 10-mile bike ride.

Paved Trailhead

Start at the Falmouth Depot Road trailhead near Pine Street for the easiest parking (and to enjoy the best scenic reward once you reach your destination). The Woods Hole trailhead can be quite congested.

2. Provo River Parkway (Utah)

“Parkway” is a perfect name for this bike trail, as it winds from Utah State Park to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. Plus, there are a few other parks along the way!

With a gradual incline, this multi-use trail is mostly flat with just a few steep uphill climbs. So even the lowest wattage e-bike can manage this, although going up the hills may be slower than you’d like. Although you’ll find walkers and other outdoor enthusiasts on the path, it’s plenty wide for all at 8-10 feet throughout.

With water, restrooms, and picnic areas along the way, you’ll be well taken care of. And the main feature of your e-bike ride will be a stunning view of Bridal Veil Falls at the northern end!

There are a couple of places where you’ll need to cross a street or ride through a narrow underpass. 

Plus, this 15-mile path connects to 100+ miles of other paved trails, so you can ride your electric bike as far as you’d like. Just keep an eye on your battery charge (and know its range in the first place) so you don’t get stuck in the middle of a long trail without assistance).

Bike Trailhead

Start at Utah Lake State Park or Vivian Park at the Northern end.

3. Trail of the Coeur d’Alene (Idaho)

With 73 miles of paved trail through spectacular mountains and valleys, this is one worth spending a few days traveling over.

With lots of places to stop and visit, you’ll get the most out of this adventure by spending a few days in the area and tackling a portion of the bike trail each day! If you do, this will truly be one of the best paved bike trails in the U.S. when it comes to lots to see and do!

If you’re traveling during the warm season, you can stop for a cool dip in the lake at Heyburn State Park. 

And any time of the year, keep a lookout for lots of wildlife, including beavers, moose, and perhaps a black bear family. In the historical town of Wallace, you’ll find great food and entertaining attractions.

One more cool fact… this trail is connected to over 3,700 miles of developing rail trail called the Great American Rail Trail!

Bike Trailhead

There are many small towns in which you can park and access the trail. Consider starting your e-bike ride in Harrison and continuing on to the end of the route in Plummer (this is a scenic 30-mile round trip ride around and across Lake Coeur d’Alene).

4. Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail (California)

Another one of the best places to ride your e-bike is in one of my favorite California cities, Monterey. This 18-mile trail down the coast is easy on an electric bike, even if you ride both ways.

You’ll wind along the Pacific Coast on a protected paved rail-trail path with amazing views of the ocean, boats, sea lions, and maybe even otters. And there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take pictures.

You can even stop for lunch and shopping in Cannery Row or Fisherman’s Wharf, or take a tour of the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Just be sure to securely lock up your e-bikes if you leave them unattended!

Bike Trailhead

You can start inland at Castroville or on the south coastal end in Pacific Grove. The rail begins here near Ocean View Boulevard and Jewell Ave. You can probably find street parking with some patience or park in the paid lot.

5. Rincon Bike Trail (California)

Although you’ll find information stating that this is only a 3.6-mile ride, you can actually ride almost 20 miles one way if you ride from Ventura into the town of Carpinteria! 

Most of the ride is protected but, if you want to go the full distance, then you’ll have to ride a short jaunt on the 101 freeway (½ mile maybe) and on some side roads with car traffic.

However, with a little caution on these parts, it can make for an awesome full day’s ride. Stop in Carpinteria for lunch on the beach before riding back to Ventura (my husband and I grabbed some tacos and ate them on the beach) or enjoy the beach and boardwalk on the Ventura end.

It can be quite windy, so dress accordingly. But the good news is that the wind won’t keep you from riding the full distance on your pedal-assist electric bike!

Bike Trailhead

Start riding in Ventura (there’s a bike path parking lot off E. Main St.) and head North or begin your e-bike ride at Carpinteria State Beach. Alternatively, if you want to avoid getting on the 101 FWY, start in Ventura and turn around at Rincon point.

6. River Mountains Loop Trail (Nevada)

This is a wonderful 35-mile loop trail that’s paved and approximately 12 feet wide. From this bike trail, you’ll get a full view of the River Mountains as you ride around them and might even spot Bighorn Sheep (one of the largest populations lives here).

You’ll also connect to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Hoover Dam, which is an amazing must-see! There are also several connecting trails to check out, as long as your ebike’s battery charge can go the distance.

Even though you’re in the desert area, you’ll be riding uphill and downhill and may find some areas of gravel even though the path is paved (or if you choose to continue onto another trail).

Bike Trailhead

There are many places to start your ride on this loop. If you’d like to start with a big climb (so you won’t have to do it later when you’re tired), park at the Lake Mead Visitor Center and ride clockwise.

7. North Pathway (Wyoming)

You and your e-bike won’t want to miss out on this amazing paved path. As it parallels HWY 89 and Teton Park Road, it’s a stunning way to see the Grand Teton Mountains, and numerous wildlife, and even stop for a little fishing at Flat Creek.

Halfway through this completely doable 20 miles (it’s easy on an e-bike at least), you’ll find the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center is a nice respite. Then, once you get to the northern end of the bike trail, you’ll get to the Jenny Lake Visitor Center where you can even connect to the Jenny Lake bike path to ride along the eastern shoreline of the lake.

But the trails still continue… the Jackson Hole Community pathway adds another 27 miles of paved road all the way to Teton Village.

Bike Trailhead

Start at any of the three Visitors Centers, where each provides parking, drinking water, and restrooms. Starting on the southern end is Jackson Hole, then Craig Thomas, and then Jenny Lake Visitor Centers (Grand Teton National Park), respectively.

8. Shark Valley Trail (Florida)

Here’s one trail you might not have heard much about. Located in the Everglades National Park, you can ride your electric bike (as long it’s 750 watts or under) on Shark Valley Tram road around an easy 15-mile loop of wetlands.

Although you won’t have to worry about your safety riding in traffic, you will have the occasional park tram pass you on this fully paved trail. But don’t be deceived by this nice little road. Watch out for alligators and other wildlife on the roads! Good thing the speed limit is 15 mph (yes, even on your e-bike).

Halfway through your ride, you can stop at the Shark Valley Observation Tower and look over the park for miles.

You can start your ride right behind the Visitors Center (and even rent a regular bicycle if you’d rather not bring your electric bike).

Paved Trailhead  

You can enter the park in your car or park outside it on the Tamiami Trail and ride in. There will be a fee for each bicycle (around $15 each).

9. Chief Ladiga Trail (Alabama)

Ready to bike to the Alabama/Georgia State Line? This 33-mile path should be no problem on your electric bike!

In fact, the trail is a smooth, flat ride through the countryside and small towns, all the way to Georgia where you can pick up the Silver Comet Trail for another 62 miles (okay, you might need to recharge your e-bike battery overnight before continuing).

This bike path is unique in that it passes through wetlands, open fields, and forests. There’s even a stretch of the trail in which you’re likely to see wildlife such as deer and foxes. Further, there are quiet towns to stop in as well as Jacksonville State University.

10. Paul Bunyan State Trail (Minnesota)

This insanely long paved bike road (119 miles!) is one of the longest rail-trail, multi-use paved bike paths in the USA. 

Naturally, you don’t have to ride its entire length, but you may just want to take a few days on your e-bike to work your way along this inactive 1893 railroad. Since there are towns to stop in for the night every 10 miles or so, this isn’t as hard as it sounds (just make sure you have the electric bike travel accessories you need, especially if you’re camping).

Besides being no big thing riding an electric bike a long distance, it’ll be worth encountering over 30 lakes, rivers, and streams along the way. And wildlife? Yes, absolutely!

Bike Path Trailhead

Start at either Crow Wing State Park or Lake Bemidji State Park on the northern end.

11. Banks-Vernonia State Trail (Oregon)

This paved rail trail is one of the best trails for families and boasts stunning views over 13 bridges and two huge railroad trestles. It’s one of the best places to ride your electric bike in the USA in the summer! With beautiful weather along for the ride, you’ll get a view of the coast as well as forests, rivers, and creeks.

The path is typically 8 feet wide which runs alongside a horse path, and is generally only a slight incline. However, there is an area of switchbacks that go up 700 feet… but the path is still plenty wide.

Make use of picnic areas and interpretive trails, as well as L.L. Stub Stewart State Park and Campground. Then enjoy the shops, town museum, and art galleries of Vernonia before heading back over 22 miles to the beginning of the trail in the city of Banks.

Trailhead

The city of Banks trailhead has the easiest parking, as well as water and restrooms. It’ll also provide for the longest ride. You’ll find the beginning of the route at NW Banks Road and NW Sellers Road.

12. Great American Rail-Trail (13 States)

I just couldn’t get away without mentioning this! The Great American Rail Trail is a multi-use bike path being developed all the way across the northern part of the USA, from the state of Washington to Washington, DC.

These paved trails have been built for over 30 years and are perfect for riding electric bicycles, even if you’re a beginner. Not only are they meant for bike riding, but with an e-bike, you’ll have no problem seeing any part of this trail system as you wish.

But you can’t yet just ride the full 3700+ miles without connecting to other roads and trails. Instead, it’s best to find a portion of the trail that you’d love to ride your e-bike on and drive to each trailhead.

However, the most fully developed bike paths(over 200 miles) are in Washington DC and Maryland and start at the U.S. Capitol.

Paved Bike Trailheads

You’ll have to do a bit of searching to decide where in the northern U.S you’ll travel in order to connect to a Great American Rail Trail. But, if you’re up for a lot of e-bike riding, I’d suggest starting at the United States Capitol and riding west!

Conclusion

Generally speaking, as an e-bike rider, you can ride on almost any public land in different states with the help of your bike’s electric motor. 

But, if you’d prefer to ride on paved bike trails, then the list and details above will help you decide which trail you want to ride on first! And although most electric bikes are allowed on these paths, you should check individual U.S. state laws before riding (especially if you have a Class 3 e-bike).

Frankly, the best trails for electric bikes are those that are paved. Riding on them will offer amazing views of so many places, landscapes, and small towns that you’d never see otherwise, even though you might’ve lived in the U.S. your whole life.

1. Wonderland Lake Loop Foothills Trail

• Difficulty: Very Easy

• Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

• Distance: 4.7 km (2.92 miles)

• Elevation:  52 m (170.6 feet)

The Wonderland Lake Loop begins at Lee Drive in the west end of Boulder, Colorado. This well-lit, all-season trail meant is for urban hikers and mountain bikers.

Paved pathways lead north, through wildflower meadows, and then veer south along the rocky banks of Fourmile Canyon Creek.

Follow the creek leads to a cement path that circles the sparkling waters of Wonderland Lake, and then back to the Trailhead at Lee Avenue.

This relaxed ride for ebikes is best enjoyed at a slower speed, even if you have the urge to go 20 miles an hour.

2. Gore Valley Mountain Bike Trail (East Vail Trail)

• Difficulty: Easy

• Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

• Distance: 6 km (3.72 miles)
  
• Elevation: 24 meters (78 feet)

This paved e-bike path begins at the Village of Vail east parking lot and meanders through bike lanes and residential streets, eventually opening up to wide open spaces with views of Alpine fields. 

It’s perfect for e-bikers who prefer a mix of natural trails, urban scenery, and perhaps a stop-off at a local cafe.

Follow motorized trails through beautiful Gore Greek to the west. A mix of pavement, dirt trails, and bike lanes takes you through dense trees, a golf course, and an Alpine meadow. 

Electric mountain bike riders can picnic at Vail Memorial Park, a large flat grassy area with public washrooms.

The elevation is 24 meters so you may need to use your pedal assist motor on the way up, but when the trail loops back it’s all downhill. You can coast with your electric bike motor off for a bit on your way back.

3. Crater Lake

• Difficulty: Easy
• Duration: 2.5 hours
• Distance: 6.6 km (4.10 miles)
• Elevation: 177 m  (580.7 feet)

Crater Lake is a hard dirt-packed trail and vehicle-free bike path that is 8 km west of Aspen off Maroon Creek Road.

The trek begins at the parking lot with its iconic view of Maroon Lake. Follow the trail to the end of the lake, and after a brief climb, find yourself on Crater Lake’s east side. 

After taking in the incredible view of North Maroon Peak, Pyramid Peak, and Sievers mountain, you can circle back to the parking lot or stay a night or two at one of the Crater Lake campsites.

4. Dirty Bismark – Marshall Mesa

• Difficulty: Moderate

• Duration: 2-3 hours

• Distance: 24.5 km (15.22 miles)

• Elevation: 24 meters (78 feet)

Dirty Bismark is a cross-country path that offers you the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, even though it passes quite close to nearby towns.

This route is one big loop that takes you through miles of treeless terrain, thus offering views of the Boulder Flatirons.

The dirt trail is rugged, but across flat land and mostly dirt. It suits riders on a regular mountain bike, as well as a fat tire ebike or one with all-terrain tires.

The trailhead begins in the west at grassy Marshal Hill and takes you through side roads and cattle gates. Natural surface trails turn into well-maintained gravel as you approach the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado.

A turnoff at Coalton Park Trailhead offers a steep climb up a dirt road to the top of the Davidson Mesa. 

The descent from the Greenbelt Plateau is a single-track trail, but at least you will save electric motor power as you coast down the dusty mountain bike trail from the Davidson Mesa.

5. Mount Falcon Park Trail

• Difficulty: Hard

• Duration: 4  hours

• Distance: 11.9 km (7.4 miles)

• Elevation: 24 meters (78.7 feet)

Mount Falcon Park Trail is challenging because of its elevation, but good for off-road capable e-bikes because of its hard-packed surface.

This lollipop-shaped route appeals to those who enjoy a slower, casual ride through urban trails and then into the woods.

The e-bike trailhead starts in Morrison, just west of Denver on Vine Street. There is an initial steep hill from the Mount Falcon Park parking lot that leads to the Castle Trail and it has designated bike lanes for mountain bikes and electric bikes. 

Keep to your right to stay on the main, wider Castle trail that leads to panoramic views of the ruins of the Summer White House, also known as Mount Falcon Castle.  Then, continue following the urban trail system around the loop to find your way back to the parking lot.

6. Left Hand Canyon

• Difficulty: Hard

• Duration: 4-5 hours

• Distance: 52.7 km (32.72 miles)

• Elevation: 24 meters (78 feet)

Left Hand Canyon takes you on a shaded scenic ride all along the Colorado Front Range. Note that unless you are riding a Class 3 motorbike, you are restricted to the designated bike lanes.

This day-long bike ride begins in Boulder Valley and takes you up the mountains to the mining town of Ward.

Enjoy views of the Arapaho plains and Roosevelt National Forest as you cruise through canyons on a flat paved road.

The road is steep during the final mile so make sure you’ve reserved enough battery life to complete the trek. Stop for refreshment in Ward, before looping and coasting back down the mountain (no battery power required!).

7. West Magnolia

• Difficulty: Very Hard

• Duration: 2.5 – 3.5 hours

• Distance: 20.9 km (12.99 miles)
• Elevation: 529 meters (1735 feet)

Roam through dark forests on your electric bike, by exploring the West Magnolia trail network. The trailhead is in the town of Nederland, just north of Boulder, Colorado.

These dirt trails are called “spaghetti trails” because they are irregular and connect to each with shortcuts. These multi-use trails best suit throttle-assisted electric bikes with good suspension and electric mountain bikes.

The first section, “Hobbit 1”, takes you through forests decimated by controlled burning ending with a view of Golden Gate State park.

Hobbit 1 drops you into the dark forest Hobbit 2, and ends at a campsite with a very steep hill.

Electric bikes can ascend Hobbit 3 to the Lost Meadow, which opens up into a valley with Aspen trees. 

As you travel up the Rocks and Routes part of the trail, you will pass an abandoned school bus. At this point, you can turn your e-bike back the way you came or coast down the Look Out Trail at top speed back down to the parking areas.

It is the fact that these natural trails are quite rough, and without signage that makes West Magnolia one of the harder Colorado trails for e-bikes to ride.

Things to Know About Colorado Bike Trails

As in any part of the world, the weather can be unpredictable in Colorado Parks but you can check the condition of the e-bike trails before you depart.

Check for Trail System Closures

Before you navigate mountain biking trails with steep ascents, such as the Dirty Bismarck trail, it is a good idea to check for closures. No electric bikes are allowed on trails damaged by avalanches, floods, fires, or storms.

Throttle-assisted electric bikes can give your e mountain bike a real boost as you mount the trails.

Mountain e-bikes with fat tires are best for riders that want to try this type of terrain.

Riding Motorized Vehicles and Bikes In Colorado Parks

As you’ve discovered, you can coast along a smooth paved road or dig your wheels in and spray some dirt in Colorado. However, be sure to maintain the 20mph speed limit The motorized trails in Colorado Parks are well maintained by the forest service to accommodate mountain bikes and electric bikes.

Many trails require an e-bike with all-terrain tires and suspension. Further, every ride is more comfortable with a suspension seat post.

Summary

Many of Colorado’s e-bike trails connect with each other. Therefore, it is well worth checking the trail map of your chosen route to see if you can fit in an additional hour of sightseeing or a visit to a local town.

Be sure to fully charge your e-bike battery before you leave so you can put in the extra mileage without running out of power. Further, make sure to check that your chosen trail is one where electric bikes are allowed.

Finally, it’s a good idea to take the number of the forest service or land management with you. This is in case your electric motor runs out of battery power and you need to be picked up from summit country.
