Thousand Helmet vs. Bern Bike Helmets (Comparison Guide)

0
Thousand Helmet vs Bern Bike Helmets

Helmets are essential pieces of safety equipment when riding an electric bike as they protect your head from severe injuries in case of an accident. Thousand and Bern are among the leading bike helmets due to their outstanding features. If you’re considering investing in an e-bike helmet, you should know how Thousand Helmet compares with Bern bike helmets.

If you want a lightweight helmet with excellent ventilation, go with the Thousand option. Otherwise, opt for the Bern helmet if you want a helmet with the most coverage. While the Thousand helmet has seven air vents to keep your head cool, Bern provides the most head coverage for safety.

In the rest of this article, I’ll examine why Thousand and Bern helmets are among the best on the market. By comparing their features, including similarities, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about the best helmet for your needs. Keep reading to learn more about these great helmet brands.

Basic Similarities

Before jumping into the specifics of each helmet, let’s examine what they have in common. This way, you’ll know what you get by buying any of them.

Both Thousand helmets and Bern helmets come in a range of colors, so you can choose the one you like. You may also decide to match the helmet color with your bike or riding outfit.

And both helmets have straps that make them secure while riding. The straps are stiff, making them durable and comfortable.

They also have certifications, such as CPSC and ASTM, ensuring they meet safety standards. Such certifications are an assurance that any helmet you buy meets minimum safety standards to better keep your head secure while riding on your e-bike.

Finally, both Bern and Thousand helmets feature a Multi-Directional Impact Protection (MIPS) liner in their helmet options. MIPS technology reduces rotational force and increases protection from angled impacts. These types of impacts are why head injuries are the most common cause of fatalities among bicycle riders.

Thousand Helmet vs Bern Bike Helmets: Differences

Now that you know what the Bern and Thousand helmets have in common and the differences, let’s look at each unique helmet separately and see what it has to offer in terms of:

  • Ventilation
  • Coverage
  • Fit and finish
  • Comfort

Thousand Helmet

Black Thousand Helmets Models
Thousand Helmets have three model to choose from!

Thousand helmets are designed to save 1,000 lives, hence the name. However, meeting this goal meant the company had to incorporate various high-quality safety features in the helmet.

Below is some more information about this helmet brand’s safety features:

Ventilation

Ventilation is a crucial consideration when choosing a helmet for an electric bike. Riding is a form of exercise, and your head can quickly feel hot under your helmet. As a result, covering your head with a helmet that doesn’t permit air circulation traps more moisture, making the ride uncomfortable.

A Thousand helmet really comes out on top when it comes to ventilation. It has seven large air vents at the top and rear sides and three cooling channels. These air vents and cooling channels keep your head feeling comfortable during intense rides, even during hot weather.

The air vents at the top have a unique design that enhances the helmet’s overall look. They also have mesh covers to keep insects and other small particles from entering.

The rear air vents facilitate the expulsion of moisture from the head. This helps your head to feel cool throughout your ride.

Thousand Helmets ventilation is on the top and rear of the helmet.

Coverage

Although the Thousand helmet offers good coverage for your head and ears, it falls short of protecting the back of your neck. The coverage is not as extensive as that of the Bern helmet, which is better for winter rides.

You should, therefore, think twice about a Thousand helmet if you want something that covers your entire head.

Fit and Finish

The Thousand helmet has a sleek design with a smooth finish that adds to its aesthetic appeal. It fits nicely on the head without feeling too tight or loose.

The helmet has adjustable vegan leather straps, allowing you to customize the fit according to your preference. Vegan straps are an added advantage and a lovely touch since they are soft and eco-friendly.

What’s more, the thicker padding in the envelope ensures a snug fit and added safety while riding. Helmets come in Small, Medium, and Large to help you get the right fit.

Comfort

The Thousand helmet provides exceptional comfort thanks to its thick padding in the envelope and adjustable straps. Plus, the air vents also contribute to keeping your head cool during long electric bike rides, preventing discomfort caused by excessive heat and moisture buildup.

A helmet’s comfort should take into account elements like sun and rain.

Thousand helmets have a narrow visor that shades the eyes from sun and rain, and they are interchangeable, allowing you to change color and style according to your preference.

Bern Helmet

Bern helmets (Amazon) are made for outdoor sports like e-biking, cycling, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, and more. Thus, they offer excellent protection and safety for extreme weather conditions and sports.

Interestingly, they offer each helmet with or without MIPS. You’ll pay around $20 more for a MIPS helmet, which is totally worth it.

Let’s take a look at these sought-after helmets in more detail:

Several of the Bern Bike Helmet Styles in different colors
Bern Bike Helmets offer multiple styles to choose from!

Ventilation

Bern helmets have almost the same air vents as their Thousand counterparts. Although a Bern helmet has 11 air vents, they are smaller, making its ventilation capacity slightly lower than the Thousand helmet.

However, it still offers good ventilation for keeping your head cool during long e-bike rides.

The air vents in the Bern helmet are strategically positioned as follows:

  • Six on the top of the helmet: These air vents help dump heat from the top of the head. As the air flows above the head, it cools down the head and helps keep it comfortable during intense rides.
  • Five vents at the helmet’s rear part: These vents assist in the expulsion of moisture from the head, keeping it cool and dry during the ride.

Coverage

Bern helmets have the edge over their Thousand counterparts when it comes to coverage. These helmets cover the entire head, including the back of the neck. This makes them a suitable option for cold-weather rides and other extreme sports that require extensive coverage for added safety and protection.

The helmet’s coverage is enhanced by its dome shape and extended rear profile. The rear profile is also lined with faux fur, making it warm and comfortable for winter rides.

Fit and Finish

Bern helmets are designed to fit correctly for comfortable rides. The large adult size option has a versatile size range from 59 to 62cm (23.23 to 24.41 inches). The range ensures that the helmet has a bit of leeway for different head sizes.

The helmet has a BOA closure system at the back that facilitates micro-adjustments. This is crucial if you want a close-fitting helmet.

Finally, Bern helmets have a stylish matte finish that makes them aesthetically appealing.

Comfort

Bern doesn’t disappoint when it comes to comfort. The helmet has detachable ear pads to protect from excessive wind noise.

Moreover, the helmet has brims that protect your face and eyes from extreme light, especially when riding without goggles (check Amazon).

The only downside is that some Bern helmets lack visors. Fortunately, you can buy them separately.

Final Thoughts

Both the Thousand helmets and Bern helmets are excellent helmet brands on the market whether you ride an electric bike or a regular bike. As the Thousand brand takes the lead in ventilation and fit, its Bern counterpart has the edge in coverage and comfort. However, both brands have MIPS liners and certifications that signify high safety.

How To Take a Surfboard on an Electric Bike (Safely)

0

Electric bikes are becoming more popular for surfers who want to make a quick trip to the beach to catch the waves. But it can present a challenge to figure out how to put your board on your e-bike.

The best way to take your surfboard on an e-bike is to purchase a surfboard rack and attach it to your bicycle. Other ways to carry your surfboard include getting a soft surfboard bag or a hard case and attaching the surfboard using a rack, bungees, velcro, or a surfboard leash.

Today we’ll discuss how you can attach your surfboard to your electric bike for maximum safety for you and the board. Let’s get started.

1. Purchase a Surfboard Rack

A surfboard rack (check them out on Amazon) is the number one safest and most effective way to carry your surfboard on your e-bike.

Surfboard racks, like car racks, are available in various styles and sizes to accommodate boards of all styles and lengths. They’re also pretty easy to install on both an electric bike and a regular bicycle.

Surfboard racks can run a bit higher cost, but there are a lot of benefits to going with this route rather than a cheaper option.

One of the biggest benefits of using a rack is that you can rest assured your board will be completely protected. The rack is going to hold the board securely. This means you can avoid problems like the board accidentally bumping against the bike’s rear rack, battery, motor, or wheels.

Surfboard racks also limit the bouncing that can occur when riding, even on bumpy surfaces. This means that the surfboard won’t end up with dings and scratches from the ride – keeping it in pristine condition.

In addition, a rack allows you to center yourself on the bike. While it is a bit of a learning curve to get used to riding with a rack, it’s significantly more accessible than riding with your board bouncing around all over the place.

Using a surfboard rack on a bike is the easiest option.

2. Purchase a Soft Surfboard Bag

Soft surfboard bags are a cost-effective option that can be used for any e-bike. These bags aren’t as secure as surfboard racks, but they’re almost as easy to use. When secured correctly, they also provide significantly more safety than attaching the board through other methods like velcro or bungee cords, which we’ll discuss in a moment.

Soft surfboard bags (Amazon) are built to provide padding and protection for your board, which is especially important if traveling long distances on your board.

While this carrying method isn’t as safe as a rack, it still provides adequate protection – much more than strapping the board to the top of a vehicle. One of the things that makes this method so high up on the protection list is the straps that the bag usually comes with.

Made of heavy-duty material, the straps are easy to attach to your electric bike. The downside is that no matter how tightly you strap the bag, it will bounce around a bit. This can cause uneven balance and create challenges when riding.

3. Purchase a Hard Surfboard Case

Hard surfboard cases provide some of the best protection for your surfboard while traveling on your e-bike. Most of the time, the cases come with straps that can easily be attached to the electric bike.

One of the best things about this option is that if your case drops, your surfboard will remain protected. It could even be hit by a car and suffer minimal damage.

However, one of the downsides to going with a hard-shell surfboard case is that the cases tend to be bulky and heavy, especially once you have the surfboard in them. This can make it challenging to maneuver, particularly if you are going downhill or around many curves.

The bulkiness can throw off your balance if you aren’t familiar with riding with a hard case. It’s best to start slow and on flat ground until you get used to it. It’s also wise to avoid putting your surfboard in the case until you become familiar with riding with the case.

Fortunately, pedaling and getting up hills won’t be too much of an issue, even with a heavy case, since you have pedal assist and your e-bike’s throttle to do the work!

Use a surfboard rack like this one to carry your board to the beach… choose a soft case or a hard case to protect your surfboard!

4. Velcro Your Board to Your E-Bike

If you don’t have a case of some sort or a rack to carry your surfboard, there are a couple of old-fashioned ways you can strap your board to your electric bike. One of the best ways to do so is to velcro it onto your e-bike.

While this might sound dangerous initially, it’s fairly secure when done correctly. The main thing is to ensure that the velcro straps are long enough to go around the whole width of the board and still have some extra.

Here’s a quick overview of how to use velcro to secure your surfboard to your e-bike:

  1. Put the nose of the board under the seat and secure it in place with two straps – one on each side.
  2. Put the tail of the board over the top of your frame and secure it with another strap.
  3. Double-check that all the straps are secure.

Once you’ve verified that all the straps are secure, you’re good to start going! You should go at a slower speed, at least initially. Be aware that your board can shift as you’re riding and can be easily damaged if you fall.

5. Bungee Cord Your Surfboard to Your E-Bike

This is essentially the same thing as velcroing your surfboard to the bike, except you’re using different materials. However, the setup is slightly different.

Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need to do.

  1. Put the front wheel of your bike into the surfboard’s leash cup.
  2. Take the bungee cord and hook the end to the back of your seat.
  3. Hook the other end to the front of your board.

The bungee cords are less likely than the velcro to come loose over time, but they don’t grip the board as well as the velcro straps.

Final Thoughts

If you want to take your surfboard on your electric bike, there are quite a few ways to do so, some safer than others. The best option is to use a rack. Your next best options are to use a soft surfboard bag or a hard case. Both can be secured easily with straps that come with the cases.

If you don’t have any of these options available, the next best options are to velcro or bungee cord your surfboard to your e-bike. This can come with challenges, but overall it’s safe for you and your board if done correctly.

How Fast Do Electric Bikes Go Without Pedaling?

0
Shows where the throttle, pedal assist, display, and gears are on an e-bike
You'll find the pedal assist gears on the left handlebar and the mechanical gear shifts on the right handlebar.

Electric bikes have emerged as a popular option for those looking for an alternative to traditional bicycles. While they may look similar to conventional bikes, electric bikes are equipped with a motor and battery that assist the rider in pedaling. They may also have a throttle that allows them to go much faster than a regular bike, without pedaling.

Most electric bikes with throttle can reach speeds of 20 miles per hour without pedaling. In most countries, including the USA, electric bikes are legally limited to having a throttle with a maximum speed of 20mph.

Read on for a more in-depth look at how fast electric bikes can go without pedaling, as well as what factors influence their top speed.

Top Speed of Electric Bikes Without Pedaling

As mentioned, the top speed of an electric bike using throttle only is 20 miles per hour. However, some throttle speeds max out around 15mph, depending on the type of e-bike and motor.

To clarify, you don’t need to pedal if you are using a throttle. However, even if you have a Class 3 e-bike that can go as fast as 28mph, you generally won’t go faster than 20mph without pedaling in addition to throttling.

But you may go faster than 20 mph if you both throttle and pedal your e-bike. In general, the harder you pedal, the faster you will go.

Top Speed of E-Bike With Pedal Assist

Pedal assist speeds typically range anywhere from 15 to 30 miles per hour, depending on the bike. The majority of electric bikes have a maximum speed of 20mph (Class 1 and Class 2), while some offer higher speeds of 28mph or more (learn more about the e-bike Classification System).

Also, entry-level electric bikes may have a lower top speed than more expensive models. This is because they tend to have a smaller motor and battery, which limits their power output.

Similarly, electric bikes with larger wheels will tend to have a higher top speed than those with smaller wheels (especially 16-inch or 12-inch small wheels). This is because the larger wheels provide more momentum, making it easier for the motor to propel the bike forward.

Further, there are throttle-only e-bikes and pedal-assist-only models (often called Pedelecs).

Speed Comparison of Electric Bike Models at Various Prices

To give you a better idea of the range of speeds that different electric bikes are capable of reaching, we’ve compiled a list of some of the popular models on the market and their prices.

The below table compares the top speed of each bike in throttle-only mode and pedal-assist mode.

As you can see, the average speed for most electric bikes is in the 20-something miles-per-hour range.

Factors that Affect the Top Speed of Electric Bikes

As we mentioned earlier, there are a number of different factors that can affect the top speed of an electric bike. It’s important to understand how these factors work in order to choose the right bike for your needs.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most important factors affecting the average speed:

Motor

The type of motor is one of the most important factors to consider when determining the top speed of an electric bike. There are two main types of motors used in electric bikes:

  • Hub motors
  • Mid-drive motors.

Hub motors are found in lower-priced models, while mid-drive motors are more common in higher-quality, pricier models. In general, hub motors tend to be less powerful than mid-drive motors. This means that they typically have a lower top speed.

Battery

The battery is another important factor to consider when determining the top speed of an electric bike. Batteries come in various sizes, which ultimately affects their power output and, as a result, the bike’s top speed.

In general, electric bikes with larger batteries will have a higher top speed than those with smaller batteries. This is because the larger battery provides high power output to the motor, making it easier to achieve a higher top speed.

Terrain Elevation

Whether it’s hiking uphill or biking up a mountain, we all know how exhausting it can be to ride a bike on uphill terrain. That’s because gravity is working against you, making it harder for the bike to move forward.

The same principle applies to electric bikes. When riding on uphill terrain, an e-bike has to work harder to overcome gravity, which ultimately results in a lower average speed, even with pedal assistance or throttle. So if your riding spot is known for its steep path, prepare yourself for a slower ride. I’d recommend that you begin increasing pedal assist levels before you hit a steep hill.

The converse is true for downhill terrain. When riding downhill, gravity is working in your favor, making it easier for your electric bike to move forward. As a result, you can expect a higher top speed.

Terrain Type

Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to ride a bike on a paved road than it is to ride on a dirt trail?

That’s because the smooth, level surface of a paved trail provides less resistance than the uneven surface of a dirt trail. As a result, it takes less effort to ride on a paved road, which ultimately results in a higher top speed.

The same principle applies to electric bikes. When riding on a paved road, you can expect to go faster than when riding on a dirt or rocky trail. Similarly, riding on a concrete path will typically be faster than riding on grass or gravel.

Weight

The weight of the e-bike and rider is another important factor to consider when determining the top speed. In general, electric bikes with a lighter weight will have a higher top speed than those that are heavier. This is because the lighter bike is easier for the motor to propel forward.

The same goes for the rider. A lighter rider will typically be able to achieve a higher average speed or top speed than a heavier rider.

Before purchasing an electric bike, be sure to research the weight limit of the model you’re interested in. If you’ll be wearing heavier clothing or carrying additional weight on the bike, it’s important to consider this to ensure that you’ll be able to achieve the desired top speed.

The Bottom Line

In general, electric bikes can reach speeds of up to 20 mph without pedaling, although an overall top speed of 28 mph can be reached in some e-bikes by pedaling. The top speed of an electric bike is determined by a variety of factors, including the motor type, battery size, terrain elevation, weight, and terrain type.

If you’re looking for a fast ride or one without having to pedal, be sure to consider all of these factors before making your purchase.

What Types of E-Bikes Does Ride1Up Have?

0

Riding the high-value Ride1Up 700 Series commuter e-bike.

Ride1Up, a relatively newly formed electric bike brand, is rapidly gaining popularity. The company, launched in September 2018, offers a range of e-bikes.

Ride1Up has several types of e-bikes, including commuters, cruisers, road, cargo, city, and even a mid-drive electric bike. Each model benefits different riding styles. For example, the Roadster V2 has a body that mimics a regular road bike and is perfect for flat terrains, while the 700 Series has the power to easily get up steep hills.

The rest of this article will dive into these electric bikes and discuss the significant benefits of each one and what type of rider they’re good for. Let’s get started!

Ride1Up’s E-Bike Collection: Types and Uses

Ride1Up currently has a total of seven different types of e-bikes. Each one is built to perform at varying intensity and offer assistance during the challenging parts of a bike ride.

Below, I’ll help you examine the popular electric bikes this company offers and discuss what each is good for so that you can choose the best one for you.

Ride1Up Roadster V2

Ride1Up Roadster V2
Ride1Up Roadster V2

The Roadster V2 is one of the most simple e-bikes that Ride1Up offers. Known as the original bike, the Roadster V2 was designed to mimic a regular bicycle.

One of only a few belt-drive e-bikes, the battery in the Roadster V2 is completely concealed, and the motor operates in almost complete silence.

With only a single gear, this e-bike isn’t built for the most challenging rides, but it remains the perfect bike to use when commuting those in-between distances of too far to walk but too short for a car drive. It offers a total range of thirty-five miles (56.33 km) before needing to be recharged.

The Roadster V2 can reach speeds up to 24 mph (38.62 kph), which is a little slower than some of the other e-bikes we’ll be talking about today, but it’s still a great speed when compared to many e-bikes that have a maximum speed of 20mph.

This is the perfect e-bike for daily commutes. Its lightweight body, sleek design, and hidden electronic components allow it to blend perfectly with your average non-electric bike. While many e-bikes advertise fancy add-ons such as hydraulic disc brakes or large head units, this electric bike keeps things simple.

Who Is The Roadster V2 for?

This is the best electric bike for easy rides over relatively flat terrains. And because of its low price and easy-to-maintain belt drive, it’s perfect for city commuters and college students.

500 Series

An E-bike model with a really short step-through.
Ride 1Up 500 Series E-Bike

The 500 Series remains the most popular e-bike that Ride1Up offers and was the first model made by the company

One thing that makes this classic e-bike stand out is the combination of comfort and sportiness. This is hard to mimic in e-bikes or regular bikes because comfort often requires larger seats with more padding. In contrast, sporty bikes focus on being lightweight and versatile.

However, this bike is incredibly stable and offers versatility for all terrains, including flat, hilly, and mountainous. Although, I do recommend sticking to flat or hilly areas, as climbing steep hills may be taxing on the motor.

The battery range for the 500 series exceeds expectations, lasting significantly longer than other e-bikes offered by both Ride1Up and other electric bike companies. Depending on the terrain and road conditions, the range is between twenty-five and forty-five miles (40.23 and 72.42 km).

Who is the 500 Series for?

Overall, this is an excellent choice if you want something that works in most terrains and provides comfort and power.

Ride1Up Core-5

Core-5 Midnight Gray
Core-5 Midnight Gray

The Core-5 is one of the best “simple” bikes that Ride1Up offers, apart from the Roadster V2. While the Roadster remains the best bike for traveling on short paved commutes, the Core-5’s all-terrain tires give it a leg up on slightly more challenging rides.

This bike isn’t as lightweight as the Roadster but still weighs in at a relatively low 49 pounds. However, both models offer similar benefits. Where the Core-5 shines is on long stretches of flat terrain or small rolling hills.

However, I wouldn’t suggest pushing this bike to go on more than small hills. While decent, the motor in the Core-5 doesn’t compare to some of the more powerful e-bikes Ride1Up offers.

But it has great value for the price and the bike is sleek and nimble. And though you can tell that the Core-5 is an electric bike, it hides it well.

Read my full, detailed review of the Core 5!

Riding the Ride1Up Core-5

Who is the Core-5 for?

The Core-5 is one of the best options for traveling reasonably long distances at a decent speed. The e-bike offers speeds up to 28 mph (45.06 kph) and a throttle function that assists up to 20 mph (32.19 kph). So, at a lower price than some of the more powerful models, it’s perfect for riders who want a fast and nimble e-bike that can handle light off-road riding but aren’t worried about steep hills.

Ride1Up 700 Series

Azure Blue Ride1Up 700 Series XR Frame
Ride1Up 700 Series XR Frame

The 700 Series focuses heavily on the performance side of things, offering a 750-watt battery, a large amount of torque, and up to fifty miles (80.47 km) of range – this bike is built for maximum efficiency and power.

The 700 Series can travel at top speeds of 28 mph (45.06 kph), but while it’s not faster than the other bikes Ride1Up offers, it is full of power and climbs hills easily.

While it centers around performance, this bike still has a somewhat bigger frame than a traditional bike, as is true of most e-bikes. Despite this, the 700 Series offers a ride quality that is enormously smooth and forgiving of all those little bumps along the way, thanks to its front suspension

This e-bike is built for speed but excels in hilly areas. It almost seems like overkill to use it on flat terrains when you can purchase something like the Core-5 or Roadster V2.

Unboxing the Ride1Up 700 Series!

Who is the 700 Series best for?

Overall, this is one of the best electric bikes for comfort and performance. It combines practicality with advanced features and a smooth ride, which is why it’s one of my favorites! Thus, it’s a great e-bike for anyone willing to pay slightly more to get a bike with even greater value.

Ride1Up LMT’D

Ride1Up LMT'D
Ride1Up LMT’D

The LMT’D is one of the best options for a city commuter bike, thanks to its torque sensor!

Because of its torque power, this e-bike is reminiscent of riding on a moped. Perhaps it’s the heavy-duty frame or the amount of power the LMT’D provides. The motor in this bike exceeds all others that Ride1Up offers, providing 100 Nm of torque that gives it the strength to navigate even the steepest inclines.

The LMT’D reaches a top speed of 28 mph (45.06 kph), like most of the other electric bikes Ride1Up offers.

This e-bike also offers a 2.2″ LCD on the handlebar, which shows all the standard metrics and the average speed you’re traveling at any given time.

Who is the LMT’D for?

Overall, this e-bike exceeds most others in power and ease of riding. So, it’s perfect for more serious riders who plan on tackling steep inclines!

The Prodigy and Cafe Cruiser

Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser in Blue
Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser

Both of these e-bikes are somewhat newer to Ride1Up’s collection. For this reason, I’ve grouped them and given a quick overview.

The Cafe Cruiser is built to mimic the feel of a beach cruiser. The comfort of this bike cannot be underestimated. It has wider 3.0″ ties and a rear rack with a weight capacity of 130 lbs, enough to carry a child seat plus a child or other heavy cargo. The bike’s overall payload capacity is a whopping 350 lbs!

Thus the Cafe Cruiser is the best cargo e-bike for those who want to cruise in comfort with a high cargo load!

The Prodigy, on the other hand, offers greater performance than any other Ride1Up e-bike. With a Brose mid-drive motor, torque sensor, suspension fork, hydraulic brakes, and higher-level components, it’s a pretty sweet deal for an e-bike that weighs only 50lbs.

The Prodigy is the best electric bike for anyone who demands more but still has a budget!

Final Thoughts

Ride1Up is growing exponentially as a company, and many of its electric bikes exceed expectations.

Overall, the best bike for riding on easy commutes is the Roadster V2. For performance, the Prodigy is your best bet. The 700 Series, which I ride, is the best all-around e-bike that Ride1Up offers.

Can You Ride An Electric Bike Without A License? (Explained)

0
Can You Ride an E-Bike Without a License?

Electric bikes may still be classified as “motor vehicles” in some states and countries, which makes it hard to understand whether you need a license to ride one.

And, in a country as big as the United States, each state has laws in place when it comes to e-bikes. Thus, you should always research what the law is when you want to take yours for a spin.

In most countries and states in the United States, you do not need a license when operating any of the electric bike’s three classes (class 3 e-bikes are limited to a speed of 28 mph) as specified by Congress’s law (HR 727). However, e-bikes that exceed 28 mph may require a license to operate.

The electric bike’s evolution process is speeding up… and so are their available speeds and features. As electric bikes get faster and more prominent, legislation is struggling to keep up as some can achieve the same speed as motorcycles.

This article will discuss where you can ride your e-bike without a license, the age requirement to ride one, which e-bikes require a license to ride, and other helpful information about licensing and laws.

What Law Governs EBikes?

The federal government has recognized “electric bikes” since around 2002. Since then, congress amended the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s original definition of electric bikes by implementing law HR 727

This law defines an electric bike as a “two- or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of fewer than 750 watts (one horsepower), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor while ridden by an operator who weighs 170 pounds, is less than 20 mph.”

Electric bikes that are powered by both human intervention and a motor are legally allowed to attain a speed of up to 28 mph. The HR 727 law covered and included all three classes of e-bikes. No license is required for any of these three classes of electric bikes.

E-bike licensing, in general, will vary from country to country, and from state to state.

Where Can I Ride My Electric Bike Without A License?

Federal law does not dictate to a state and its respective region how to govern the use of e-bikes. Most states have individual laws regarding speed limits and maximum power outputs. Electric bike riders need to follow each state’s vehicle codes and public street rules.

Most states in the United States follow a three-tiered class system for e-bikes, dividing them into Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3.

Class 1Class 2Class 3
These are known as pedal-assist or pedelecs. They are known as throttle e-bikes.They are known as speed e-bikes.
The motor is limited to a top speed of 20 mphThe motor is limited to a top speed of 20 mph.The motor ceases to assist when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 mph.
The electric motor only works when the rider is pedaling.Includes a throttle that can propel the bike without the driver pedaling.A throttle is optional, but most e-bikes in this class have them.
Some pedal assists include a throttle offering an extra boost that will only engage if the rider pedals.A rider can still pedal while using the throttle. They are equipped with powerful motors: 750 Watt or 1000 Watt
Pedal-assist cannot be used if the driver is not pedaling. It can be used on the same paths that traditional bikes are used onNormally equipped with a speedometer. They’re only allowed on some roads.

States That Define E-Bikes By A Three-Tiered Class System

The following states define an e-bike by way of the three-class system above. In these states, an electric bike is classified as a bicycle (even though it has an electric motor), and you’ll have to comply with the individual state’s rules and regulations regarding speed limits, maximum engine outputs, and traffic codes.

No License is Required To Ride an E-Bike In The Following States:
Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming

The states listed above typically exempt you from registering, licensing, and insuring your electric bike. This differentiates electric bikes from other motorized vehicles like scooters and mopeds. These states all have different laws when it comes to their operation!

  • In Idaho, a specific law states that motorcycles and mopeds should not be classified as e-bikes and exempts owners from registration and license procedures.
  • In Wyoming, localities are empowered to enact a registration fee for non-electric bikes and e-bikes.
  • In Arizona, Utah, and Washington, you are expressly allowed to ride your electric bike on bicycle paths or greenways.
  • All the states listed above have a requirement in place that your electric bicycle should display a label indicating the classification number, motor wattage, and top-assisted speed.

States That Define Electric Bikes By A Two-Tiered Class System

The following states define e-bikes via a two-tiered classification system:

  • New Jersey
  • West Virginia

New Jersey follows a two-tiered system that excludes “low-speed e-bikes” from having to register or get a license or insurance. These are your class 1 and class 2 e-bikes. They define class 3 e-bikes as “motorized bicycles” and require a driver’s license and registration from the MVC.

In West Virginia, the law allows for class 1 and class 3 electric bikes; however, not for class 2 e-bikes that are solely propelled by a motor.

States That Require A License

If you plan to ride an e-bike in the following states, you may need some type of license:

  • Alabama (“B” restricted License)
  • Alaska (M-class License)
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri (No longer requires a license as of August 2021)
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota

These states have not created a specific electric bike law. They still fall under another vehicle classification with specific license and registration requirements.

The states not mentioned have some form of classifying e-bikes, but it differs from the two-tier and three-tier class systems, and they each have their own set of laws.

License Requirements In Other Countries

The U.S. is quite a complicated country regarding e-bike laws, as each state has its own set of rules and regulations.

Let’s cast the net to other countries worldwide and see how they approach the e-bike licensing issue.

When Do You Need A License For Your E-Bike?

Typically, you’ll need a license when your e-bike is keeping up with mopeds or motorcycles! That is a dead giveaway that you probably need to be getting a license for your super electric bicycle. As soon as your motor output exceeds 1000 watts, or your electric bike is flying past the 28-mph mark, most states will then classify it as a “motorized bicycle”.

When it exceeds power and speed limits, it’s then regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as a motor vehicle. Your electric bike will then be subject to other road and safety requirements.

What E-Bikes Require An License?

Many e-bike manufacturers produce bikes that fall into the no-license zone. However, some models offer more power and speed, automatically pushing it into the you-need-a-license zone.

When purchasing any of the below-listed e-bikes, you’ll have to contact the DMV for licensing and registration requirements:

Can You Ride An E-Bike With A Suspended License?

Driver's license application on computer screen

It depends. The reasons behind your driver’s license suspension could determine if you are allowed to still operate an e-bike while within your suspension period. Some states will allow you to ride one no matter the reason behind your license suspension. Others, like California, will prohibit you from riding anything except a traditional bicycle.

Should your driver’s license be suspended due to a conviction that led to a driving prohibition, then some states will not allow you to ride an e-bike. A licensed lawyer can guide you regarding your particular state’s law around suspended driver’s licenses. Again, the fifty states will potentially have fifty different rules.

Typically, most states will allow you to ride an electric bike while your driver’s license is suspended since it’s not classified as a motor vehicle.

Other Important Electric Bike Laws and Regulations

There are quite a few regulations to follow and understand for electric bikes. Are helmets required? At what age can a child ride an e-bike? And even whether you’re allowed to ship your bike with its battery or put your baby in a child seat on an electric bike.

Here’s a look at some of these laws for riders in the USA.

Find out whether the laws allow your child to ride an e-bike!

E-Bike Helmet And Age Regulations

Some states have age requirements that demand mandatory helmet-wearing. In some states, you are free to choose if you want to wear one or not, and other states require you wear one no matter what your age.

States That Require The Rider And Passengers Of Class 3 E-Bikes (Any Age) To Wear A Helmet:
California, Georgia, Louisiana, New York, Ohio South, Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia
States That Require All Bicyclists Under 12 Years To Wear A Helmet:

States That Require Any Bicyclists Under 16 Years To Wear A Helmet:

Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, South Dakota, Utah
States That Do Not Require Bicyclists To Wear Helmets:
Arizona, Idaho, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming

The states not mentioned don’t have any helmet requirements when riding an electric bike, regardless of license requirements.

On What Roads Can You Ride Your E-Bike?

As mentioned earlier in the article, road restrictions and laws will differ from state to state. However, for the most part, Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes may be ridden on any road and path that a traditional bicycle has access to unless a particular state law prohibits it.

In the states that allow for a Class 3 electric bike to be ridden, they are often not allowed on off-road paths and trails. Be sure to investigate what your state’s stance is concerning this topic.

Conclusion

Fifty states of differing rules and regulations and little uniformity make an electric bike rider’s life complicated at times. What is allowed in one area may be the opposite in the next. The best advice is to confirm what your state rules are about riding an e-bike (and other states that you might visit).

These regulations will often indicate if your bike is road legal and if you need to have a license to ride it. The motor output, speed limit, e-bike classification, age requirement, and wearing a helmet are good places to start understanding the laws so you don’t get into trouble with the authorities.

Electric bikes are here to stay, and local governments are working hard to incorporate them into legislation. Uniformity would be nice, but as I’ve mentioned, having fifty states that govern themselves will always be a problem, as each has different traffic regulations and classification systems.

To keep everything legal, do your homework, and enjoy your e-bike!

What you need to consider when looking for the best electric cargo bike is that they come in a variety of styles with different features. Some can carry kids while others can only carry cargo. Further, some have small front baskets, while others have huge baskets and cargo carriers.

Below you’ll find a variety of e-bikes with baskets to suit your particular needs.

1. Bunch Bikes The Original Electric Cargo Bike

Bunch Bikes The Original Electric Cargo Bike

What I love first about this e-bike is that it ships to you fully assembled! Thus, you can ride it immediately without the hassle of figuring out how to assemble it. In addition, Bunch Bikes offers a 14-day free trial so that you can see if you like the bike or not. This family cargo bike is suitable for those who wish to visit parks, take the kids to school, or ride with their dogs.

What’s unique about this cargo e-bike is that it has a huge basket with passenger seats in the front, so you can enjoy it while riding with up to two kids or pets.

With a 500W motor and a range of up to 35 miles, its power is sufficient for carrying your kids or pets around town, especially if you’ll be riding in relatively flat areas.

And, since it costs over $4,000, you might want to consider their financing option. This ebike brand actually has four different models to choose from and has recently started offering different basket colors. No matter which one you choose, this bike is a lot of fun for any family.

2. Heybike Cityscape E-Bike

With free shipping, fast support, and an option for a 30-day return, the HeyBike Cityscape (Amazon) is available for around $849 (yes, you heard me right!).

This affordable, classic city commuter e-bike with a large basket and a 350W hub drive motor can take you as far as 40 miles and up to a max speed of 19mph. It only takes 5-6 hours to charge the battery and has 3 pedal assist modes as well as a throttle!

This e-bike is an excellent option for those who want rear cargo basket options and basic features for a fair price. But even with its low price, it comes with Shimano 7-speed gears, swept-back handlebars, fenders, and an easy-to-mount step-through frame.

3. NAKTO 22inch Cruiser Electric Bike

NAKTO 22in Elegance Cruiser Electric Bike
Affordable Nakto E-Bike on Amazon

If you’re looking for a simple e-bike with a basket, this affordable cruiser might be the best e-bike for you.

This e-bike comes with an LCD screen and a beautiful basket on the front. For only $649 (or less), the NAKTO 22 Inch Electric Cruiser Bicycle offers a lot of storage room, first with the front basket, and then on the rear rack.

The bike has V and E-brakes, enabling you to stop regardless of weather conditions. Its spacious cargo area will provide enough room to transport any items you like. The bike has a 250W motor, a 36V 10AH lithium battery, and other user-friendly characteristics including a front headlight and a rear cargo rack.

You can expect a comfortable ride with an ergonomic saddle and five pedal assist levels to get you up to speed!

4. Yuba Spicy Curry

Yuba Spicy Curry

The Spicy Curry bike, with a price of $5,199, will help you put anything you like in its unique basket, starting from gear, groceries, items, and pets, to kids. This long-tail electric cargo bike is meant to help you carry your kids and loads. In fact, it can carry up to 3 kids and up to 440lbs!

Thankfully, it’s powerful enough to do this! It has a mid-drive BOSCH cargo line cruise motor and a powerpack 500 battery. By lowering the gravity center (the rear wheel is slightly smaller than the front one) this e-bike can be easily handled by anybody who wants to travel with lots of kids or gear.

What’s more, the bike itself is a surprisingly low weight of just over 60lbs.

Plus, it fits short riders (from 5′) to those 6’5″ tall. If you can afford it, this e-bike can help you carry your precious cargo all over town.

5. Urban Arrow Family Electric Cargo Bike

Urban Arrow Family Electric Cargo Bike

For a steep price of $6,999, you can get the Urban Arrow e-bike with many valuable details, accessories, and a lot of space. There’s nothing quite like it!

The unique thing about this e-bike is that it can comfortably carry kids at a lower center of gravity and right in front of you. Traditional bike trailers leave kids behind, where they can’t see as much, and you can’t see them.

This electric bike is almost 9 ft in length and very heavy (weighing in at 110lbs). So, it’s definitely a ride through the city bike, not something you’ll often put in your car to travel with.

However, it’s very comfortable and might be exactly what you’re looking for. Component-wise, it has hydraulic front and rear disk brakes, front and rear LED lights, and is powered with a Bosch battery. You can choose from various accessories (rain cover, rear carrier, luggage net, etc.) to make it a family bike ride to remember.

6. Mod Easy E-Bike

Mod E-bike

This electric cruiser with an exciting “sidekick” can be yours for $3,890. I love the cool retro frame and its compatible side basket! Plus, it has hydraulic disc brakes for ultimate stopping power, a speed of up to 28mph, and a range that goes up to 45 miles, making it one of the most incredible e-bikes with a side basket out there.

The ergonomic sitting position enables you to fully extend your legs, maximizing your comfort while you sit on a broad saddle with an adjustable stem.

With this e-bike, you’ll have a great ride due to its multi-terrain tires, LED headlight and tail light, and powerful geared-hub motor. Plus, it also has a rear rack, so you can ride with a child and carry your belongings at the same time!

7. Radio Flyer L885

For $1,999, you can get the Flyer L885 with an option for a kid/cargo carrier. Suitable for families, this longtail fat tire cargo e-bike has a 5-level pedal assist and a 500W brushless hub motor… and can actually carry two kids at a time.

With it, you can take your kids anywhere or load it with anything, and you can travel up to a 50+ mile range. It has puncture-resistant tires, an LCD, and an ergonomic design with an extended integrated rear rack.

Although the bike weighs 73 pounds, its carrying capacity is a whopping 400 pounds. And with the pedal assist options and throttle, it’ll feel light under your hands whenever you do some errands around your community, travel your neighborhood, or pick up your kids.

How To Choose The Best E-Bike With Basket?

When you shop for the best electric bike with a basket or cargo rack, there are many things to consider. First, you’ll need to figure out what type of e-bike you want.

What style do you prefer: a commuter, cruiser, road, fat tire, or mountain e-bike? The type of e-bike may determine what style of basket or cargo holder you can use. Next, decide on a color and size. Then decide if you want a front or rear rack, regular or step-through frame, type of saddle, and whether you need a suspension fork or seat post suspension. These options can make your ride more comfortable.

Then choose from these features:

If you have questions regarding the e-bike, don’t hesitate to ask the dealer! Also, if you have questions about assembly, make sure you get help.

When looking for an e-bike, you must find one with a high-quality build. E-bikes that have been given good reviews on their components tend to hold up well over time.

There are many different price points for e-bikes. If you’re on a strict budget, you should still expect an electric bike with a good review, even if it costs less than $1,000. On the other hand, you can typically get a good quality e-bike if you spend between $1,000 and $2,000. I have a few different electric bikes, all in this price range, and all are of great quality.

By far, however, the best value is my Ride1Up 700 Series which comes with a strong rear rack for a basket and a lot of other great features (take a look at my 700 Series review here).

black 700 Series Rear Rack
The Ride1Up 700 Series comes with a rear rack!

However, if you have a flexible budget and want to buy one of the best electric cargo bikes on today’s market, consider spending between $2,000 and $5,000. E-bikes at this price point are generally made from higher-quality parts and materials. Also, these types of e-bikes may have better warranties than cheaper models.

Why Should You Choose An E-Bike With A Rear Rack?

Some people ride e-bikes that don’t carry cargo. But, e-bikes with baskets offer a variety of benefits. For example, they typically have a larger payload capacity than their counterparts. This means that they can carry more weight on the bike overall (this includes your cargo and your body weight).

For example, the Aventon Aventure has a high weight capacity of 400 lbs and a rear rack. So, if you weigh 200 lbs, this e-bike can still handle another 200 lbs. However, each rear rack or basket also has a maximum weight capacity, so you don’t want to carry more cargo than it can hold (but you can carry more by adding a front basket and a rear cargo container).

Red Aventon Aventure Step-Through
Aventure fat tire ebike (step-through version)

Then there are e-bikes whose payload capacity is much less. For example, the popular Rad Power Bikes have a maximum capacity of 275lbs. But, typically, this is more than enough for most riders, including myself!

Cargo e-bikes can also carry kids (in a child’s seat), pets, groceries, and commuter essentials.

So, there are lots of reasons you should choose an electric bike with a rear rack. However, you can always add one to your bike later (Amazon has a huge selection of bike racks like this one)!

Can I Put A Basket On An Electric Bike?

You can add a basket to your e-bike in most cases. Even if you don’t buy an e-bike that comes with one, many brands offer them as an optional accessory.

You also have the choice of purchasing a basket and/or bike rack from other retailers. My husband got a rear rack for under $40 on Amazon that fit his e-bike perfectly.

Final Thoughts

An e-bike is an excellent way to get around when you’re not in the mood for walking. But with so many e-bikes to choose from, it can take time to find one that’s affordable and does what you need.

So this list of the best electric bikes with baskets is compiled to help you check out your options and find a terrific one for you! These models include multiple e-bike designs at different price points, so there’s something here for everyone.

What Types of Electric Bikes Does Costco Sell?

White Costco Jupiter Defiant All Terrain Foldable Electric Bike
Costco Jupiter Defiant All Terrain Foldable Electric Bike

Electric bikes are an efficient way to reduce traffic in congested cities, a great way to save money and get exercise on your commute, and a lot of fun for recreational riders. Costco is one of the places you can buy an affordable e-bike due to its competitive prices and exemplary customer service. However, it can be overwhelming to choose the right e-bike due to the different options available.

Costco sells the Sondors Smart Step LTD, Jetson Haze, and Jupiter Defiant All-Terrain Foldable electric bikes. Costco may also sell a few other options but many times they lack customer ratings.

The Sondors Smart Step LTD has the highest price point among the three. However, the high price is worth it since the bike has the highest range of 25 to 40 miles (40.23 to 64.37km).

In the rest of this article, I’ll discuss the different e-bikes sold at Costco, including their prices. I’ll also cover the differences between these ebikes in terms of top speeds, range, and payload capacity.

Then I’ll show you some alternatives to Costco e-bikes so that you are sure to find the best one for your needs.

Sondors Smart Step LTD Electric Bike

The Sondors Smart Step LTD is among Costco’s highest-quality electric bikes. The bike has a 36-volt battery with a 10.4Ah rating. With it, the bike can cover up to 40 miles (64.37 km) on a single charge.

The Smart Step e-bike is designed to be easy to transport. Since the bike has a foldable frame, you don’t have to worry even when the battery runs out of charge – you can just fold it up and be on your way. The frame is also made of lightweight aluminum alloy material, making it easy to carry.

The Sondors Smart Step e-bike also has a lightweight rear carrier rack for cargo. The rack is easy to install and has tie-down points to secure your belongings.

The rack can carry up to 20 lbs (9.07 kg) loads. Therefore, you can rest assured that your items will be safe during the ride (but this rack cannot carry a child!). To make it even better, the bike comes with a clip-in bag with the following features:

  • Multiple compartments
  • Quick clip-in system
  • Easy-access zippers and wide openings
  • Reinforced and padded body
  • Hard base

For speed lovers, the Sondors Smart Step doesn’t disappoint. The bike has a top speed between 18 and 20 mph (28.97 and 32.19 kph). However, it’s good to bear in mind the factors that affect speed, including the rider’s weight, wind resistance, and humidity.

It also has hydraulic brakes, oversized tires, and a front suspension fork to ensure a smooth ride even on rough terrain.

Other notable features of this electric bike include:

  • 350W electric motor.
  • 5-step pedal assist.
  • An LCD device that displays battery level, speed, and the distance covered.
  • Front and rear lights.
  • A horn.
  • A USB port where you can charge your phone and other devices.

Costco sells the Sondors Smart Step LTD electric bike at $1,499.99, the highest among the three options. However, the price is worth it due to the bike’s quality features. Apart from this e-bike’s long range, it has a strong and foldable frame, easy cargo transportation, and an impressive top speed.

Jupiter Defiant All Terrain Foldable Electric Bike

White Costco Jupiter Defiant All Terrain Foldable Electric Bike
Costco’s Jupiter Defiant All Terrain Foldable Electric Bike

The Jupiter Defiant All-terrain Foldable e-bike is the middle-ground option among the three e-bikes sold at Costco.

This is a high-powered option due to its motor. The bike has a 750W motor that makes it suitable for different terrains, so the bike can serve you well even on rough terrains and mountains where only stronger bicycles can navigate. However, it’s worth noting that the rougher the terrain, the more power is needed to steer the bike. Consequently, the battery will drain faster.

The bike’s 4-inch (10.16-cm) wide fat tires make rolling on any terrain a breeze. These tires have a hard grip pattern suitable for riding on sand, ice, and mountainsides.

The Jupiter Defiant All-terrain bike has a 48-volt battery that increases its range, especially when riding on flat terrains. It’s also possible to double this range by quick-swapping the battery with a charged one.

If you’re a speed lover, the 7-speed Shimano gear shift on this e-bike gives you the leeway to shift the speed quickly to match your desired level. The ability to change the speed is an added advantage to fit different situations and needs. For instance, it makes it possible to lower the speed to the minimum when you want to go slowly while talking to friends.

The foldable frame makes this one of the most portable e-bikes on the market today. Unlike the standard bikes, you can fold your Jupiter Defiant all-terrain e-bike to fit smaller spaces. This makes transporting it in your car’s trunk easier since you don’t have to worry about it unfolding.

Other features that rank the Jupiter Defiant all-terrain foldable electric bike among the best are:

  • A bright 5-speed LCD.
  • Impressive torque.
  • 20-inch (50.8-cm) wheel diameter.
  • 300 lb (136.08 kg) maximum weight capacity.
  • A lightweight frame made from aluminum.
  • A 60-mile (96.56-km) range, making it the best option for longer distances.

Here is a YouTube video demonstrating some of Jupiter Defiant All-terrain Foldable e-bike’s features:

Costco sells this bike for $1,249.99.

Jetson Haze Electric Bike

Black Jetson Haze Electric Bike Costco
Jetson Haze Electric Bike Costco

The Jetson Haze e-bike is your go-to option if you’re on a tight budget. However, the low price range of this bike doesn’t mean it compromises on quality. The bike has 16-inch (40.64 cm) tires with a 350W motor that gives it the power to climb hills and ride on rough terrains.

The bike has a pedal-assist feature that allows you to vary the power output while riding. The three pedal assist levels make it possible to customize your riding experience based on the terrain.

Like other e-bikes sold by Costco, the Jetson Haze has a foldable frame. The bike’s double-folding compact frame makes it easy to transport and store.

Most electric bikes come with the challenge of unfolding themselves when folded for storage or transportation. The Jetson Haze e-bike is designed to overcome this challenge by incorporating a magnet within the frame. The magnet ensures that the frame remains folded until you unfold it manually for use.

What’s more, the bike has a removable battery that makes it possible to charge it separately. The removable battery means you can buy a second battery to extend the bike’s range. A fully charged battery covers a range of 15 miles (24.14 km).

Compared to the other two, the major downside of this bike is that it has a shorter range. However, you can overcome this challenge by having a spare battery whenever you want to cover a longer range.

Finally, with the Jetson Haze e-bike, you don’t have to keep worrying about its safety whenever you leave it somewhere. The anti-theft locking device on the bike will give you peace of mind since it locks the bike’s rear wheel.

Other features that make the Jetson Haze a great buy include the following:

  • A bright LCD with speed and battery level information.
  • Front and rear lights.
  • It’s a lightweight option weighing 48 lbs (21.77 kg).
  • A maximum weight capacity of 265 lbs (120.2 kg).
  • A top speed of 15.5 mph (24.94 kph).
  • Its all-terrain wheels make it a versatile option for different terrains.

Costco sells the Jetson Haze electric bike for $649.99, making it the most budget-friendly option among the three e-bikes sold by Costco. But they also carry the Jetson Bolt Pro that I’ve reviewed.

Things To Know Before Buying an Electric Bike at Costco

According to CNN, commuters waste 54 hours annually while stuck in traffic congestion. This is where electric bikes come in. They enable you to navigate the congestion easily and arrive at your destination faster. However, knowing some basic things about e-bikes and how they differ from regular bikes can help you make better purchasing decisions.

The main difference between an electric bike and a regular one is the motor on an e-bike that assists in pedaling, making it easier to ride over longer distances or rugged terrains. However, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to pedal on an e-bike. Most riders still pedal for exercise and to extend the bike’s range.

Other features that define most electric bikes, whether you buy them from Costco or directly from a top brand are:

  • Electric bikes are battery-powered: Most electric bikes have 36-volt or 48-volt batteries, while some more powerful e-bikes have 52-bolt batteries. This means the bike will operate until the battery runs out, which can be anywhere from 20 to 100 miles (32.19 to 160.93 km), depending on the e-bike, its battery, road conditions, your body and cargo weight, and more. Lectric brand e-bikes have excellent-priced models that can go up to 100 miles, which is way above average!
  • E-bikes have various levels of pedal assistance: The bike’s motor will provide assistance based on the rider’s pedaling level. The levels can range from no assistance to throttle-on-demand, where the motor does all the work for you. However, this option drains the battery much faster.
  • The range: Range in e-bikes refers to how far you can travel on a single charge. The range varies depending on the terrain, the rider’s weight, and the pedal assistance level chosen, among other things.
  • Top speed: This refers to how fast the ebike can go with the motor’s assistance. Although some e-bikes can attain top speeds of 45 mph (72.42 kph) on the motor alone, U.S. federal bike law limits it to 20 mph (32.19 kph) when using a throttle.
  • Payload capacity: E-bikes have different payload capacities for efficient operation. Most should have a payload of 250 and higher. The Aventon Aventure fat tire bike, however, has a payload capacity of 400lbs! Just keep in mind that overloading your electric bike can cause damage to the motor and battery.

Similar E-Bikes Not Carried at Costco

It’s important to note that not every type of electric bike is offered by Costco. There are literally hundreds of e-bike brands and thousands of options. But to make it easy to compare, here’s a list of top e-bike brands having a variety of models that are priced comparatively from less than $700 to $1999:

Within these four high-quality brands, you’ll find nearly every type of electric bike including folding e-bikes, fat tire bikes, commuter e-bikes, road e-bikes, and cargo bikes. The benefit of buying directly from a brand might also be worth it.

Top support, replacement parts, and accessories are just a few reasons to buy from the brand itself.

Final Thoughts

Buying an electric bike from Costco is one of the best decisions you can make. Costco is a genuine e-bike seller and offers options from reputable brands. It also has an excellent return policy should you be unhappy with your purchase.

Before buying an e-bike, it’s essential to identify the type that best suits your needs, such as mountain or commuter bikes, and to consider the practicality of its range for your daily use.

Finally, you should adhere to the bike laws in your state or country and ensure you have a license to ride an e-bike.

Are Electric Bike Conversion Kits Worth It? (The Truth)

Hub Motor Conversion Kit parts

The e-bike may seem to be a modern invention, but the concept has been around since the 1890s. Technology has changed significantly since then, which is why they have seen sudden popularity in recent years. Commercial e-bikes are readily available, but you also have the option to use a kit to convert your existing bicycle to an e-bike.

But how do these e-bike kits compare, and are they worth the cost?

An electric bike conversion kit is typically worth the money. Kits are cheaper than buying a new e-bike. This lets you put more money into buying a more powerful, better-quality conversion kit. Conversion kits are typically easy to install with only a few tools and even new e-bikes often require some assembly.

The newer technology used in e-bikes has allowed conversion kits to improve, allowing anyone to turn their standard bicycle into an e-bike. You have a wide range of conversion kits to choose from, depending on your cycling needs.

Plus, conversion kits have some advantages over getting a new e-bike, but some disadvantages may convince you to go the new e-bike route.

Why Choose an E-Bike Kit Over an E-Bike?

The concept of an e-bike may be appealing to you, and an e-bike has many benefits and advantages in a wide range of applications. From commuting to recreation, an e-bike can revolutionize the way you use a bicycle.

Which would be the best route to acquiring an e-bike? Is buying a conversion kit the way to go, or is a factory-produced, branded e-bike a better choice?

There are many different types of e-bike conversion kits, each with its own benefits, strong points, and weaknesses. I’ll show you the different options for conversion kits, but first, let’s look at why a kit may make more sense for you than buying a new electric bike.

Pros Of An E-Bike Conversion Kit

The advantages to choosing the conversion kit route to turn your existing bicycle into an e-bike are many, but some points will be less important to some people than others. However, most of the advantages make a compelling argument in favor of conversion kits.

    • You keep your original bike. If you have recently purchased a regular bicycle or don’t want to part with your old bike, you don’t need to sell it or store it. You simply buy the kit and perform the conversion on your old bike. This has implications for the cost factor of e-bikes.
    • A conversion kit is generally cheaper, but not always. The cost of the bike (frame and tires) is a large component of the cost of a new e-bike. With a conversion kit, this cost is no longer relevant since you already own the bike.

Conversion kits vary in price depending on the type and power of the kit, but they can be less than half the cost of a factory e-bike. However, if your bike is expensive and you want a good kit, the price of the kit and a professional installation can quickly rack up to be similar to the cost of a new electric bike (although of lower quality).
    • Customize your e-bike to your needs. A kit allows you to build your electric bike to your needs and you can customize parts to match without replacing the entire kit or bike if your needs change.
    • Easy removal of the conversion kit. You can remove the kit from your bike to restore it to its original condition or install the kit on a different bike.

Cons Of An E-Bike Conversion Kit

As with any after-market, add-on product e-bike conversion kits can have some disadvantages, which may be a deciding factor in your considerations regarding kits. And of course, it’s important to remember that conversion kits vary depending on the type of electric bike conversion that’s being done.

    • Mechanical aptitude is required. Conversion kits are easy to install, but you need to have some degree of mechanical aptitude (or spend a lot of time reviewing helpful videos) to complete the conversion.
    • Messy wiring. Depending on the type of e-bike conversion kit you select, there may be many wires that you need to neaten up and try to hide. Standard bicycles do not hide this wiring well because they are not designed for it.
    • Added weight. The kit and the batteries add weight to the bicycle, making it difficult to carry on subways or up a flight of stairs (or even just to put in the car).
    • Weight distribution on the bicycle. A conversion kit is an add-on that changes the weight distribution and the feel and control of the bike. If the weight of the kit is not positioned correctly, it could affect the e-bike’s stability.
    • Safety of the kit. There have been some reports of conversion kits, particularly the batteries, catching fire and causing explosions. However, this is mainly if they are not properly installed or have inadequate protection.
    • Brakes and tires may need upgrades. Depending on the conversion kit, you may need to upgrade the tires and brakes on your bicycle for compatibility with the conversion kit.
    • Some kits do not come with a battery. Many kits are not sold with the battery included… and batteries are one of the most expensive parts of an electric bike.
    • Better technology in factory e-bikes. In general, factory e-bikes come with more bells and whistles integrated into the bike, such as GPS functionality.

    Pros Of A Factory e-Bike

Factory-built electric bikes are a popular choice for transitioning to commuting from driving a car, protecting the environment from gas emissions, recreation, and exercise. The growing popularity shows that buying a new e-bike can have merit over using an electric bike conversion kit.

    • The e-bike is purpose-built. The factory e-bike is designed to fit all the components in the bike in an ergonomic and balanced way. Thus, there are no weight imbalance issues or exposed wiring.
    • Better aesthetics. New e-bikes don’t look like a DIY job. And with many models, including those like the Ride1up brand with batteries integrated into the frame, you have to look very closely to see that it is an electric bike. In fact, having an integrated battery helps protect the components as well.
    • Factory warranty. The factory warranty and after-sales service and support are a peace-of-mind factor should things go wrong.
    • Better speed and functionality. Brand-name e-bikes generally perform better than bikes converted with a kit. Factory bikes also have more built-in functionality and perks to get you to buy. This might include a better controller with an LCD display, headlight, bike bell, USB port for your cell phone, etc.
    • Better quality batteries. The batteries incorporated into factory e-bikes are generally higher-quality lithium batteries from well-known manufacturers. The batteries will provide more power and last longer than most electric bike conversion kit batteries.
    • More robust, lightweight frames. Factory e-bike frames are designed to carry the extra weight of the motor and batteries. The frames are strengthened in strategic locations for the additional weight. In some cases, the frames are made from lighter materials to counteract the weight of the extra equipment.

    Cons Of A Factory e-Bike

There are some disadvantages when opting for a factory e-bike, but if your cycling needs are straightforward and don’t change much, the cons against this choice may be less of an influence on your choice.

    • New electric bikes are expensive. Factory e-bikes of about 250W-350W typically have a starting price of between $800 and $1000. More powerful bikes in the 500W range cost between $1200-$1500 and up. The most powerful e-bikes allowed on roadways in the US are 750W, and they generally cost between $1200 and $2000 on the low end.

Thankfully, however, there are many well-known and respected brands, such as Rad Power Bikes or Aventon that have high-quality, affordable e-bikes.
    • Expensive replacement parts. Once the warranty on the electric bike has expired, spare parts and maintenance can be expensive.
    • Difficult to upgrade. Purpose-built e-bikes have all the components built into the bike and may only accept parts from the same manufacturer. Changing parts like the battery to gain more power may not be possible.

Types Of Hub Motor Conversion Kits

There are multiple types of e-bike conversion kits, and the choices will vary in price and features. The various types all have different strengths and weaknesses. We’ll cover the different kits briefly to give an overview of the styles and their suitability.

There are two main types of e-bike conversion kits: hub motors and mid-mount motors. There are sub-types of these categories which determine how the motors work.

    Hub Motor E-Bike Conversion Kits

Hub motor conversion kits are one of the main types of electric bike conversion kits available and are some of the easiest types of kits to fit onto your existing bike. Many conversion kits use this type of motor.

As the name suggests, the motor is fitted to the wheel’s hub and the kit usually comes with the wheel. It’s important to get a kit with the same wheel size as your existing wheel, or you may need to replace the opposite wheel with a matching size.

The sub-categories in this group are direct hub drive motors, geared hub drive motors, front-wheel hub motors, and rear-wheel hub motors.

    Direct Drive Hub Motor Kits

Direct-drive hub motors are basic and simple, incorporating the motor into the hub of the wheel. When the motor is operating, it turns the wheel directly as opposed to using a geared mechanism. The design is simple, making it easy to install and maintain.

The main negative of these motors is that they need to be large to generate enough power to drive the bike. Smaller versions would not have enough power to be useful, especially at low speeds.

The main advantage of these types of motors is that they are relatively cheap in comparison to some of the other motor types. Another positive is that direct drive hubs are very reliable due to the simplicity of the motor.

Here’s a direct drive hub motor for a front or rear wheel from Ebikeling that costs under $500 on Amazon:

    Geared Hub Motor Kits

Geared hub motor e-bike conversion kits are smaller than direct-drive hub motors and generally more efficient. This kind of motor uses a planetary gear reduction system to connect to the motor’s stator.

This gearing system means that for every rotation of the bike’s wheel, which is essentially the motor’s case, this hub motor spins many more times.

This increases the motor’s speed and efficiency and allows a smaller motor to produce more energy.

The main benefits of these motors are that they are small, fast, and relatively maintenance-free compared to the other motor types. One of the main benefits of this motor type is that if the battery pack goes dead, you’ll feel very little resistance on the pedals, and you can ride the e-bike as if it were a normal bike.

The planetary gearing system does experience wear, particularly when carrying heavy loads or cycling many hills. However, nylon gears are cheap and easily replaced.

    Front Hub Motor Kits

As the name suggests, front hub motor conversion kits are on the hub of the front wheel. The drive can be either a direct drive or a small geared motor.

The best choice is a geared motor due to its smaller size, making less impact on the steering and control of the bike due to its lightweight characteristics.

Direct drive motor conversion kits can be fitted to the front wheel are cheaper and produce more torque, but the heavier weight on the front wheel can be a little disconcerting till you become accustomed to it.

Front hub motor kits have an advantage in that they provide two-wheel drive when the motor is engaged. You power the back wheel by pedaling and the motor powers the front wheel.

The disadvantage of a front hub kit is that they are not great for off-road riding, particularly on rough or sandy steep hills where they tend to spin and lose traction.

    Rear Hub Motor Kits

Rear hub e-bike conversion kits are fitted on the rear wheel of the bike. They can also be direct drive or geared motor types.

They are more complicated to install on the bike than a front hub motor because you have to remove your gear cassette from your original wheel and mount it on the wheel that comes with the kit. You may need additional, specialized tools (Amazon) to get this conversion done.

The main disadvantage of a rear hub motor is that it is considerably more difficult to repair punctures on the back wheel with the motor installed. It can be done, but it takes longer.

    Mid-Drive Motor Conversion Kits

Mid-drive e-bike conversion kits are some of the more expensive versions but also the most popular. This type of motor is the most efficient variety and produces much more power and low-end torque than either of the hub motor types.

This type of motor is fitted in the middle of the bike near the pedals. The main difference in this type of configuration is that the motor drives the pedals rather than the wheels.

The main disadvantage of this kit is that the installment is considerably more complex than the hub motors. It’s also not compatible with all bicycle types. Only bikes with threaded pedal axle brackets of a certain size can accept this type of e-bike conversion kit. This makes it important to buy the right kit for the bike you’re going to convert.

The mid-mount motor also does not allow for a double front cog on the pedals, and when the motor is not working, there will be significant resistance felt in the pedals. Mid-mount motors also require more maintenance than hub motors.

You’ll probably also need additional tools to complete this conversion, such as this wrench.

Why Are Electric Bike Kits So Expensive?

The prices of e-bike conversion kits will vary depending on the motor’s style and the motor’s power rating. So, are they worth the money?

Direct-drive hub motors are the cheapest kits, ranging from $200 to $350. Geared hub drive motor conversion kits range in price from $300 to $500. Mid-drive conversion kits are some of the most expensive and can range in price from $500 to $1200.

E-bike conversion kits are somewhat pricey because of the electronic components and motors incorporated in the kit. The kit usually consists of the motor, which in the case of a hub motor is an entire bicycle wheel, a controller for the motor which contains sophisticated electronics, and the wiring and connectors.

Many kits are not sold with the battery included in the price. If the battery is not included, you can budget an additional $200 to $600 for the battery, depending on the battery size, capacity, and quality.

So buying an electric bike conversion kit is typically worth it, unless you are buying the most expensive mid-drive kit and high-powered battery.

    Conclusion

Conversion kits to convert a regular bicycle into an electric bike can be cheaper than buying a new factory e-bike, but there are always trade-offs.

Some e-bike conversion kits will work well, and others may be problematic, especially if you get a kit that is not exactly compatible with your existing bike.

For this reason, many people who use conversion kits take their bikes to a bike shop to get the right kit and get it fitted correctly to the bike. This will increase the costs but it will also save time and frustration in trying to do it yourself.

Conversion kits are worth the cost if you don’t mind building your bike into an electric bike. But if you can afford it, a factory e-bike will typically outperform a kit bike in terms of performance, reliability, and features.
