Why I Ride My Ebike in the Stio OPR Short- Lycra vs Spandex

I wish I had these ebike shorts sooner! I ride electric bikes every day and I’ve gotten sick and tired of yanking, pulling, and readjusting my shorts!

I just want to be comfortable and stay cool… but why do bike shorts have to be lycra or spandex?

When it comes to riding ebikes, the choice of clothing can significantly impact enjoyment, comfort, and performance. Lycra and spandex are popular choices among cyclists due to their flexibility and tight fit, but there’s a growing trend toward opting for more versatile and stylish options. And to be honest, what I’m about to show you is 10% spandex… but 110% better.

Now, you might call these baggies, bermudas, dungarees, outdoor wear, casual clothes, or just uh shorts. Regardless, wearing the right clothes when ebike riding is essential for ultimate enjoyment, comfort, and style.

I’m Lisa from E-Biking Today and, with the help of my husband Marc, I share what I’ve discovered about riding clothes for electric bike riders and the Stio OPR Short.

Read the important warning about the shorts under “Functionality”!

Here’s why Marc and I prefer the Stio OPR Short and casual wear over traditional Lycra or spandex when riding our ebikes.

The Lycra and Spandex Dilemma

Spandex is tight and uncomfortable!

Lycra and spandex have long been the go-to materials for cycling apparel. These synthetic fabrics are prized for their ability to stretch and conform to the body, reducing wind resistance and providing a snug fit. They are designed to minimize chafing and maximize aerodynamics, making them ideal for competitive cycling.

However, there are several downsides to Lycra and spandex that make them less than ideal for everyday ebike riding:

Appearance

While Lycra and spandex are great for performance, they’re not exactly the most fashionable choices. The skin-tight fit isn’t suitable for casual wear, making it inconvenient for e-bikers who want to transition from riding to other activities without changing clothes.

Comfort

Lycra and spandex can feel restrictive and uncomfortable during long rides, especially in hot weather. They tend to trap sweat and heat, leading to discomfort and potential skin irritation.

Versatility

These materials are designed primarily for cycling, which limits their versatility. They’re not ideal for activities that require a broader range of motion or a different style of clothing.

And guess what, we don’t care about aerodynamics because we’re riding electric bikes and can go as fast as we want.

Why We Chose the Stio OPR Short

Stio apparel offers a refreshing alternative to traditional cycling wear, combining comfort, style, and functionality. Here’s why we ride ebikes in the Stio OPR Short:

Comfort and Breathability

Made from a lightweight, quick-drying Schoeller stretch fabric, the Stio OPR Short provides excellent breathability. It’s 90% Nylon and 10% Spandex. So, it keeps moisture away from the skin, keeping us cool and dry even on hot days. The relaxed fit is super comfortable and I love that they don’t bunch up while riding, unlike Lycra or spandex. Additionally, the gusseted crotch offers easy mobility on the saddle and helps prevent chafing.

Versatile Design

The Men’s and Women’s OPR Short are designed for performance and casual wear. It features a sleek, minimalist design that looks great both on and off the bike. Marc’s favorite thing about the shorts is how easily he can transition from an ebike ride to a casual outing without feeling out of place.

Functionality

Wear apparel that keeps you cool while riding!

Despite its casual appearance, the OPR Short is packed with features that make it function perfectly for e-biking. Multiple storage pockets mean that we can easily hold our phones, keys, and ID wherever we ride or hike.

Then there’s the Stio® T-Lock snap and zippered fly closure. It’s so much easier to use than a typical button or snap. But heed this warning! Do Not pull to unsnap or you may break it like others have. Look carefully at the correct way to open and close it.

Further, Stio shorts are ventilated specifically for mountain biking. And they’re designed for a variety of mountain bike activities including long-distance rides and challenging climbs. So, we’re assured that they can handle ANY type of e-bike riding, even bikepacking!

Wondering what OPR stands for? The shorts are named after Old Pass Road, a gateway to popular downhill trails and singletrack cycling in Teton County, Wyoming.

Construction

The Stio Short is made from lasting, high-quality 4-way stretch fabric. It can withstand the rigors of daily riding, including trail abuse and frequent washing, without losing its shape or performance. Its durable water-repellent finish handles unexpected weather conditions and makes dirt easy to brush off.

Not only is the contoured waist comfortable while riding, but there’s also built-in ventilation in the waistband,  pockets, and inseam. Let’s not forget the sturdy YKK zippers.

Eco-Friendly

Stio is committed to sustainable practices, and the OPR Short reflects this ethos. The fabric is made from recycled materials, reducing the environmental impact of your electric bike riding gear.

Packable

Although the OPR shorts aren’t labeled as packable, the lightweight material rolls up easily to fit into your bike bag.

Sizing and Fit

You can easily adjust the waistband in the OPR short and wear the tank or tee tucked in or hanging out!

Knowing that the 11 ½ inch inseam would allow a good fit, Marc and I ordered the sizes that we typically wear. We agree that the shorts, tee, and tank top are true to size. At 5’1”, 110 lbs, I would’ve had a more snug fit in a size 2 short. But I decided to size up to a 4 to get a breezier, more adjustable fit. I just use the hook and loops at the waistband to tighten or let out as needed. Since you can customize the OPR shorts using these hooks, you should consider sizing up if you’re between two sizes.

Being petite, the shorts fall just above the knee and I roll them when I want a more tailored fit. I like how the length protects more of my legs while riding. If you’re of average height, they won’t be as long.

Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Apparel

Stio has a wide selection of what it calls “mountain life” clothing. The OPR shorts are just the beginning. I paired the Women’s OPR short in the color Sediment with the Divide Tank in Boundary Black Heather. Marc added a Divide Essential Tee in Mountain Shadow Heather with his Boundary Black OPR short. Both are made with lightweight, recycled fabric that is fast-drying and odor-controlling. We like that they’re soft and fit loosely but aren’t baggy.
